iTunes Review
It may have been Zac and Ethan Holtzman’s dream to recreate the vibe of the ‘60s Cambodian pop music they once accidentally uncovered, but it’s Cambodian émigré Chhom Nimol who provides the authenticity and exotic vibe to this mix of American garage rock and old-styled Cambodian pop. For album number three, Nimol sings in both Khmer and English, providing a newfound accessibility that allows Zac Holtzman the chance to duet on the playful tug of war of “Tiger Phone Card,” where they recount the trials of a long-distance relationship. Elsewhere, the group evoke the aura of spy flicks and soundtrack music designed to show off the brilliant features of yesterday’s ‘hi-fi.’ This deliberate ‘retro’ attempt gives the entire endeavor a striking “time travel” quality. Their sense of humor is laced in the wacky Farfisa organ riffs that sound even odder in context with the Asian modalities, while the narrative of “Sober Driver” is unconventionally funny, as the night’s designated straight man uses a perfect deadpan to convey his mirthless fate.

Live In San Francisco
by SeandkarlinSo this album has received many good reviews and I wanted to add my vote to that camp. This is a great album. Lot's of fun. So much so that I went out this weekend to see them here in San Francisco. But I must say that I was a little disappointed. From their songs and music videos, I felt like there was some real good chemistry in the band, especially between the leads. But seeing them on stage, I felt nothing. There may be many reasons for this (bad night, pissed off at each other, small venue) but I suspect that they just don't yet know how to "play" with each other. I hope they learn, because the music is great. There is just so much more they could do live if they wanted to.
Nice mix of cultural music
by Khmer in a former lifeGreat mix of different music styles, love the mix of Khmer influence. Nice to see a mix of both old and new Khmer music being introduced to the rest of the world. A must buy! Wish they would tour in the Northeast US.
Had my misgivings at first...
by TeenAngstI loved the previous album "Escape From Dragon House" but i was a little irked when a lot of the high energy from the previous album was more mellowed down in this one. However, when I listened to it and it was even more magical and personal (even though I only understand the English lyrics) than before.
