iTunes Review
When singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980, his band Joy Division naturally ceased to exist. But the group themselves reformed a few months later as New Order, adding keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. Their first album, 1981's Movement, was seen as a vaguely morbid attempt to cash in on Joy Division's posthumous success. It wasn't that great, to be fair, but by the time of this, their sophomore album, in 1983, the miraculous transition was complete from bleak, minimal post-punk to joyous, forward-thinking minimal dance-pop gods. Power Corruption & Lies is a very smart mixture of icy, atmospheric pop with sounds gleaned from Kraftwerk, dub, and early hip-hop, and techno. Included here is "Blue Monday," a propulsive monster of a song that's deservedly the best-selling 12" singles of all time.

Music that shaped electronica and dance music as we know it.
by VortographI bought this album when it came out and practically wore it out by playing it tirelessly. For me, Power, Corruption and Lies really broke out of the simplified pong-like sounds of earlier synth bands was the precursor for the biggest 12" of all time (in the UK) called Blue Monday. This album shaped my musical taste for years to come. Simply brilliant.
I totally disagree with the Apple review of the record that New Order's first album Movement was seen as dull, morbid, and cashing in on the death of Ian Curtis. The first track, Dreams Never End is one of my all time favorite songs. Critics give Ian Curtis all the credit for Joy Division's success. But the three remaining members moved on forming New Order and one of the most innovative and influential electonica/dance bands of the 80's and 90's; without Ian Curtis.
way ahead of it's time
by swervingly learnedi will always have a place in my heart for new order who gave much meaning and solace to me as a kid. kudos to ffg who listed the tracks in the correct order. you MUST listen to the tracks from age of consent>leave me alone to really appreciate this album. i remember on the cassette your silent face was the first song on side 2-a wonderful counterpoint to 5-8-6 the last song on side 1. i miss the way that cassettes and vinyl had part 1 and then the sequel or counterpoint!
Just simply AMAZING
by LUISFMThis album is just perfect. Age of Consent, Leave Me Alone and Your Silent Face are some of my favorite songs ever.
