iTunes Review

Common has long been interested in expanding the boundaries of his music, but with Universal Mind Control he dissolved the walls that separate hip-hop from modern electro, indie rock, and emo. The Neptunes oversaw almost all of the album’s production (with the exception of “Make My Day,” “Changes,” and “Everywhere,” which were produced by Mr. DJ) and their trademarks alight in the woozy fancy of “Punch Drunk Love,” and the piledriving pulse of “Sex 4 Suga” and “Announcement.” “Universal Mind Control (UMC)” and “What A World” contain the most relentlessly club-friendly rhythms of Common’s career, although the songs also hearken back to the old-school electro of Afrika Bambaataa and the Fantasy Three. Common still has hip-hop in his heart, and despite its messianic complex, a song like “Gladiator” shows the rapper’s fundamental rhyme skills remain intact: “Syncopated is the style that I fight with, write with / Mr. Excitement, change your face up like a white chick.” While Universal Mind Control might be the last straw for fans of Mobb Deep, the album stakes new ground that Common can share with artists as diverse as Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, and TV On the Radio.

Very disappointing

It's kinda sad to see him do stuff like this - it will be a permanent blemish on his record. I hope the real Common comes back for the next album. Skip this one.

If you must buy something, Changes is the only decent song.

I blame the Neptunes

I am sick of the Neptunes. I am sick of their overblown sound. Even more, I am sick of great hip-hop acts using them to "improve their sound" on nearly whole albums which come out wack. Remember when this happened to Tha Alkaholiks? And now Comm... Say it ain't so.

Common - Universal Mind Control

After the very solid 2007 album Finding Forever, Chicago rapper Common drops his new album.

Universal Mind Control (UMC) 4/5
Punch Drunk Love 2/5
Make My Day 4/5
Sex 4 Suga 1.5/5
Announcement 3.5/5
Gladiator 4/5
Changes 3.5/5
Inhale 2/5
What a World 3.5/5
Everywhere 3/5

Common's eight album is mediocre compared to his last album Finding Forever. Though the album has weak moments, their are some average and above average tracks making this a decent album. After the breif intro, and the lead single "Universal Mind Control (UMC)" the album is just adequate after that with following mediocre tracks like "Punch Drunk Love" and "Sex 4 Suga". The album shines with tracks like "Announcement" and "Gladiator" though it doesn't take off much. The album isn't to bad in the lyrical department, some songs like "UMC" and "Gladiator" had good lyrics. "Sex 4 Suga" had a strange whispered hook, followed by some dissapointing lines dropped as well. Production can be very catchy like in "Sex 4 Suga" with some great production by The Neptunes that is extremely catchy and dance ready. Producers The Neptunes and Mr. DJ bring out some catshy production when needed, but some songs production was bad and boring. Universal Mind Control is a decent album, but may cross some Common fans as mediocre.

Rating: 6/10, C-.
