iTunes Review

Marilyn Manson’s shock value tends to cloud perceptions of his musicality and intelligence. His music is imbued with the celebratory darkness and glam of Alice Cooper and David Bowie. His passion is palpable, wrapped in layers of dense metal guitar and industrial tones. For The High End of Low Manson regains the spirit of his late ‘90s period when he was public enemy #1. “Arma-goddamn-m**********n-Geddon” and “We’re From America” is Marilyn at his subversive best, exposing society’s hypocrisy and depravity. “I Want to Kill You Like They Do In the Movies” and “Pretty as a Swastika” add to Manson’s catalog of anti-love songs. Manson’s band — keyboardist Chris Vrenna, drummer Ginger Fish, and bassist Twiggy Ramirez (back in after a long hiatus) — operate on "blast-first ask-questions-later" marching orders. It’s the most raw and aggressive Marilyn Manson has sounded in years. No, Manson won't have to go door-to-door to shock people, as lampooned by The Onion; The High End of Low serves that purpose just fine.

Okay.
Smells Like Children was an album.
Eat Me, Drink Me, was an album, like it or not.
Antichrist Superstar, GAOG, all fine and well.

This... was not an album.
And never, please, god never ever ever come within arm's length of lady gaga ever again. Fer chrissakes.

Disappointment.

Everything went downhill after Mechanical Animals. As a Manson fan from way back (pre-Portrait of an American Family) I'm really just over all this. Mechincal Animals was something innovative and new that still had the shock value from his previous albums, all insanely good - especially Smells like Children. Hearing everything since then has been a major disappointment. Here's the deal - he was amazing and shocking when he first came out and now no one cares anymore. He's no longer pushing boundries, he's just pushing out albums so he can make money. Just like Eminem, who's also a major disappointment now. There's no way to even redeem himself, he's just getting older and doing more of the same, which is boring. None of his music even sounds appealing anymore. I thought when Twiggy re-joined the band it would be a step up but it's all just been a major letdown. Too bad.

3rd-best album, and that's a HUGE compliment.

Mechanical Animals and Golden Age of Grotesque are the only MM albums that are better than this one. I mean, I was expecting this album to be horrible beacuse there were so many negative reviews for it, but it's AMAZING! I don't know if it's the fact that Twiggy's back or what, but he really did a good job with this album. I had this exact same experience with Eat Me, Drink Me (which was also amazing, seeing as Manson wrote a song that trashed MCR), and I think everyone needs to understand something: Manson is much older than he was when he wrote Antichrist Superstar. He's done making that style of music, and instead of wishing for him to write music that he doesn't want to write anymore, everyone needs to accept that MM has changed or admit that they aren't actual MM fans. Also, a lot of people have said that MM is "back", but that's impossible because he never "left" to begin with (like I said, Eat Me, Drink Me was amazing). I hope he puts out several more albums as he is obviously still talented.

Love him or hate him, the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" — Marilyn Manson — was indisputably among the most notorious and controversial entertainers of the 1990s. Celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech and denounced by detractors as little more than a poor man's Alice...
