Album Review

Swing Out Sister's 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection features 11 of the group's lighthearted synth pop singles, including the hit "Breakout." Songs like "Waiting Game," "Surrender," and "You on My Mind" follow suit, while their cover of "La la Means I Love You" tries too hard to be soulful and emotional. Overall, this is a decent collection, but the 1998 import The Best of Swing Out Sister remains the definitive best-of for this group.

Yuck.

Typical greatest hits collection. Hits but hardly any of their best songs. Where's 'Don't Say The Word', 'Mama Didn't Raise No Fool', 'That's The Way It Goes', "Closer Than The Sun', 'Something Out Of This World', or 'Love Won't Let You Down'? Hang on to your mix CDs...

Breakout

Yeah, so... I'm a guy, a typical guy, early 30s, and in my office they play an inoffensive music station and the song Breakout is a part of their mix. The song got into my head. I hadn't heard it in well over a decade. And I bought the single. Judge me if you want.

Cool, Smooth, and Killer Sound

Even if this just had the best of SOS it would be a good starter package for new fans and something a heavy duty fan would want if they wanted all of SOS albums, but this 20th Century Masters edition includes a killer remix of "Notgonnachange". That alone was worth the cost of the CD and makes it a must have for SOS fans.

Although Swing Out Sister's music is unashamedly commercial pop, their impeccable indie credentials (keyboardist Andy Connell and drummer Martin Jackson were formerly of A Certain Ratio and Magazine, and singer Corrine Drewery had no professional experience at all before joining), jazz-tinged arrangements,...
