iTunes Review

The Big Pink, a British duo consisting of Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, unleash a big noise on their debut, A Brief History of Love. Their retro shoegazer sound updates the approach of bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine while adding some tough hooks and marvelously murky production. The album was largely self-produced and these guys clearly know what they’re doing because they make the loud, distorted guitars, electronic drones, synth loops, and assorted psychedelic fringes all sound surprisingly rich and warm. Squalls of industrial noise lend “Crystal Visions” an eerie edge, the undeniably catchy “Dominos” sports an immediately memorable chorus, and “Velvet” rides an addictive pulsating beat. They also slow things down on “Love In Vain” and the title track without losing too much momentum. True to the title, love and lust are the dominant lyrical themes with perspectives ranging from cynical and removed to vulnerable and confused. Expansive and exciting, A Brief History of Love is an impressive first effort.

a brief history of love

great album of real, tell-it-like-it-is lyrical truth that fits the music in the most pained, honest and beautiful way. (though, it's a little ironic that the cover art got airbrushed before the release; that's not so real. ha.)

Great. Loud. Worth It.

Anybody missing the shoegaze beauty of the early 90's will be more than pleased with The Big Pink. The wall of sound is alive.

Finally, it is here!

I love this band and thankfully itunes finally added their album. The Big Pink are a new band and I found out about them by word of mouth. It is hard to just put their music in any gerne because they are a bit different but still so great. They will be touring the US in October so be sure to check them out! My top picks are Too Young to Love, Dominos, Velvet, A Brief History of Love, Golden Pendulum, and Love In Vain.

Biography

Formed: London, England

Genre: Unknown

Years Active: '00s

London residents Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell formed the Big Pink in their home studio, where the two musicians began mixing the droning soundscapes of Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine with the lush electronics of M83. Furze had previously cut his teeth as the guitarist for Panic DHH and Alec Empire, while Cordell's day job (founder and owner of Merok Records) saw him nurturing the talents of the Teenagers, Klaxons, and other British tastemakers. After experimenting with distorted noise and melodic...
