Album Review
On their third album, South have a lot of cheer about; this record is their debut for Young American as well as their first attempt at self-production. Dave Eringa, who produced With the Tides, does mix a few tracks, however, Adventures instantly comes off as fresh and new. Their signature gauzy dream pop has shifted toward something more clean-cut and tangible. "There must be more to life/no more mistaking happiness" from album opener "Shallow" highlights a sunny energy from South. For fans who enjoy their work with James Lavelle might think South isn't serious here. That's the thing: they are. They're serious in finding a hospitable sound, and that's what Adventures is—a record that features a churning mix of acoustic and electric guitars, warm melodies, and dreamy vocals. As the momentum builds, the band's confidence grows, especially on album standout tracks such as "A Place in Displacement" and "You Are One." "Safety in Numbers" could be a more stripped-down version of "Colours in Waves." South doesn't strive to sound like anyone or anything else here. It's an enjoyable effort in the way that they have rediscovered themselves—as songwriters and musicians. It's good in a basic way. Fans of Badly Drawn Boy's Have You Fed the Fish and Doves' Some Cities should understand Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars.
Customer Reviews
untouched gem
this band is amazing. thankfully hidden from the world of terrible radio and trendy teens. good people with real musical flavour, please listen/hear/dance to/drive to/love this album as well as their previous releases. all 3 studio albums offer different tastes of their musical abilities. YOU ARE ONE is the one to try on here.
This is South's BEST RECORD YET
All I have to say is wow. I have this on constant repeat in my car. Everyday I have a new favorite song. I thought With The Tides was a beautiful, beautiful record, but this really takes it a step further. It has some absolutely rocking moments like "You Are One" and "Shallow." Then it has some heartfelt gems that these lads do better than anyone else - check out "Flesh and Bone." Plus "A Place In Displacement" acoustic is amazing. These guys are rock's and England's best kept secret, (aside from the OC fans who should know this band).
Finally...
I actually haven't bought this album yet, but 'here on it' is one of my all-time favorites, I used to go running to it along monument avenue in Richmond, Virginia back what seems like forever ago. Just a trip of an album - from ambient to rock to everything in between, but somehow it all fit together. I hope that this album matches that...I liked 'with the tides' somewhat, but not as much as 'here on in.' I hope Itunes allows us to buy the others too...
