Album Review

The Butcher Brothers at first seem like a strange choice to produce Am I Pretty?, the first album by the modern Christian rock band Skypark. After all, the pair became famous through their work with Cypress Hill and Urge Overkill, two of the most hedonistic bands of the '90s. Nevertheless, the pair are professionals, and they're clean, muscular sound is perfectly-suited for modern rock radio — and if Skypark are anything, they're post-alternative modern-rockers. Yes, there is an underlying religious theme to the music, but the streamlined punk-funk and alt-pop makes Am I Pretty? accessible to all listeners. There's a bit of a problem in terms of consistency — not all of these songs have memorable hooks, but there are enough catchy tunes to make it a promising debut.

Customer Reviews

miss them so much

growing up in jr. high when I first heard this band under the name sinai I fall in love with the good solid rock with great vocals. They renamed and still great music. They only did two album under the skypark name but tryone wells is now solo and doing great music. I just miss the music that all four made together.

The Best Ever!

This album introdude the best ever songs that Skypark produced and written before signed over. The sincerity and honesty was felt in every song!

Amazing rock band!

I saw Skypark in concert before this album was recorded and again after its release and spent a good deal of time hanging out with the band both times. Prior to this album they played a raw, underproduced unique style that blended ska, metal, acoustic, and jazz. After this album they began a descent into mainstream pop conformity that took them into oblivion. This album was their peak where everyrthing meshed perfectly: songwriting, performance, production, lyrics. Every song on here is outstanding. At the time I was a very serious Christian; now I am no longer Christian but still really like this album. If you are looking for Christian lyrics, you can find plenty here. If you are not big on Christian lyrics, you can block out the one or two really overt songs and still find plenty of songs that will uplift you that you can apply to your own life without feeling preached at.

Biography

Genre: Christian & Gospel

Years Active: '90s

Bringing the innocent sophistication of melodic pop with a boy and girl vocal exchange to San Francisco, Skypark's tales of summer crushes and broken hearts were a mainstay throughout their brief career. With the influential charm of The Field Mice and Sterolab that coincided with their own trademark of lighthearted harmony, Shelflife Records took notice and released their one and only release, Summer...
