iTunes Review

In danger of backing themselves into an effete musical corner, Belle & Sebastian come out swinging for their sixth studio album. The Life Pursuit is an exciting and varied collection of tunes that highlights everything that made the Scottish combo so endearing with its 1996 debut Tigermilk along with the addition of more muscular glam rock and even lounge jazz. Stuart David and Isobel Campbell are long gone, but Stuart Murdoch takes the loss in stride and misses not a beat. “Dress Up in You” sports an ebullient trumpet line that recalls the Grass Roots’ “Bella Linda,” while “Sukie in the Graveyard” hustles past with the swagger and lyrical metrics of fellow Scot-songwriter Momus. “Another Sunny Day” jangles through the expected ‘60s kaleidoscope, whereas “White Collar Boy” cruises in with a playful bump ‘n’ grind worthy of prime T. Rex and the Kinks at their most class-conscious. And “The Blues Are Still Blue” is not a blues-based rocker but a frivolous piece of AM radio fluff that grooves like the Brady Bunch when they performed as the Silver Platters — and even sneaks a cowbell in there behind the cheesy electric guitar solo. Fun for everyone.

nothing quite like it—a friendly surprise

it is difficult to sum up, though there is a pretty potent total as well as magical parts. I don't know if it is ironic, slightly political, beautiful (not just beautiful, that would be glib), or quite possibly tinged with a religious non-fervor that is so subtle it isn't offensive. or all those things.

I am like those poor people who the state forgets about (though not one of them) and refuses to attend to their serious pychiatric needs—I listen to music all the time; and I won't just hear it. Erik satie's music is the only other music I know that I *love*.

the album is flawless—they appear to have waited until they were completely satisfied with every song, including every detail of production. not studio—forced. I only wish I could afford full 1411kbps CDs rather than poorly encoded mp3s. but, that notwithstanding, six stars, were that possible. just perfect, which is from the the Latin for (put simply) not able to be more throughly done or made. <3 <3

Amazing!

This albulm has many of my all time favorite songs on it like "sukie in the graveyard" and "we are the sleepyheads". "The Blues are Still Blue" is also a song worth of being blasted from car speakers

Excellent

A band that takes its name from a French children's television series about a boy and his dog would almost have to be precious, and to be certain, Belle & Sebastian are precious. But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes...
