Album Review

From the chaotic opener "And the Hero Will Drown," until the complete frenzy of "Falling Down," St. Louis' Story of the Year shows a persistent flare for the dramatic on their debut disc from Maverick Records. Taking influence from a variety of modern rock, the quintet delivers a solid, Dashboard Confessional-like spirited first effort from beginning to end. They slow down on crunchy ballads like "Anthem of Our Dying Day," "Swallow the Knife," and "Sidewalks," showing that Story of the Year can be graceful and melodic as well as relentless. Energetic outbursts like "In the Shadows," "Razorblades," and the title track "Page Avenue" shows a band hell-bent on composing youthful anthems for the 21st century, hitting their target more often than not. Produced by John Feldman of Goldfinger, Dan Marsala's unyielding vocals certainly highlight the disc, along with the band's steady and layered instrumentation. The band's energy feeds off of agitation and frustration, and while they don't really offer anything new, their solid execution of the 12 songs on Page Avenue certainly impresses.

Story Of The Year has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Ever since this debut album came out I've been following them through their ups and downs and each album's different approach at Alternative Rock. The entire band has the potential to make great music, and it is portrayed very nicely here. Every song is good. Seriously. Some of them are softer and others are harder but they are all catchy and each of them are unique (other than the fact that they are all within the 3 minute mark). And don't hate on these guys just because you dont like their music, or because you may think someone like Fergie or Taylor Swift is better than them, or you dont like occasional screaming. If any of these apply then you shouldnt be anywhere near this side of itunes. But buy this album anyway to support the artist.

1. And The Hero Will Drown 10/10 A great opener for the album. Easily one of my favorites.
2. Until The Day I Die 9.5/10 Its a catchy song and its radio friendly but its still an awesome song.
3. Anthem Of Our Dying Day 10/10 I know its the popular one but its still one of my favorites.
4. In The Shadows 9/10 Dan's screams are shown off in this song. A little overdone but its still great.
5. Dive Right In 9/10 Its a great song. A little weak at times but they still get their point across.
6. Swallow The Knife 9/10 It starts out very slow but then picks up the pace. I always like these kinds of songs.
7. Burning Years 8.5/10 Its got all sorts of different riffs in it and its interesting and unique.
8. Page Avenue 10/10 Best song on the album. Its catchy and it may sound generic but theres obviously something that makes me keep listening to it.
9. Sidewalks 9.5/10 The acoustic song on the album. Its good and has some interesting chords.
10. Divide And Conquer 9/10 By far the most epic song on the album. It brings out the hardcore side of SOTY
11. Razorblades 10/10 Another one of my favorites. It wouldve been a great way to end the album, hence the lyrics "This is the end" but then there was...
12. Falling Down 7/10 Worst song on here. Looks like they might have stuck it on as a filler. The only thing good about it is the end when they mess around with a voice changer... i don't know if its on itunes but its on the real CD in stores.

Long story short its most definitly a top 5 album on my list. Go buy it.

Story of the Year took root in the late '90s under a different name, Big Blue Monkey, in St. Louis, MO.
