iTunes Review

It was impossible for Oasis to exceed the rock’n’roll heroics of their sophomore album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, but that didn’t stop them from trying with 1997’s Be Here Now. The album finds Noel Gallagher desperately attempting to write his own “Hey Jude” in the form of several extended anthems —“D’You Know What I Mean?,” “All Around the World,” and “Magic Pie.” Weighed with guitar overdubs, banner-waving choruses, and multi-part song structures, those songs and others on Be Here Now nearly collapse under their own sense of self-importance. In his obsession with making every aspect of Oasis bigger and bigger, Noel was in danger of letting go of the sneering punk recklessness that had made the band such a success to begin with. Yet, listening back to Be Here Now ten years after its release, one can find great songs lurking behind the bombast. “The Girl in the Dirty Shirt” swirls into an easygoing psychedelic groove, while “My Big Mouth” and “I Hope, I Think, I Know” feature electric vocals from Liam Gallagher that recapture some of the spit and fire of Definitely Maybe.

Be Here Now is the third album Oasis produced and had the tough act of following the wildly popular Definitely Maybe and What's the Story Morning Glory?. Be Here Now is often blamed for the fall of Oasis. In my view this is just a media narrative created by people who aren't as familiar as the fans are with the band and judge albums solely based on sales. The story simply doesn't do justice to the quality of these songs. The biggest difference between this album and the first two, is overconfidence. After writing Supernova they thought they could play their songs louder and for longer than they needed to. Nevertheless, the loudness and length of these songs doesn't change the fact that they are excellent. This album has the same amazing Oasis vocals and melodies as the first two albums combined with a much louder, faster, rocking sound. Top songs: 1. D'Know What I Mean? 2. My Big Mouth 3. Don't Go Away 4. Magic Pie. 5. Fade In Out 6. I Hope I Think I Know. Overall, I put the album at their 4th best, right behind 3. Masterplan, 2. Definitely Maybe 1. What's the Story?

People tend to throw this album under the bus, but I really don't know why. Oasis was always about massive amounts of ego and truly epic rock and roll. This album delivers both.

On the date of release, Aug. 1997 I purchased this album. Rolling Stone Magazine had given Be Here Now a glowing 4 star review. There was a special on MTV singing the praises of this record and telling Oasis's backstory. Then the following record came out (Standing on the Shoulder of Giants), the band had went through a line-up shuffle and all the reviews were stating that the first two Oasis records were genius, Be Here Now sucked and now they need to find themselves once again.
Be Here Now is a great listen. Yeah, they were all jacked up on coke and every song is 9 minutes long because they were so high that they didn't quite know when to end a song, however every song is good and some of the songs are great.
When Noel Gallagher was describing to MTV Be Here Now he was speaking of how intense of a sound this record conveyed compared to the predecessors. Now that is speaking of two landmark records of the 1990's. In Oasis's prime, grandiosity was Oasis, excess, etc...yeah, these songs are long, but there is excellent songwriting and the songs are solid as a rock. This is a collection of songs from a band at their pinnacle. Selling under 10 million units of this record made this record unsuccessful, which thinking of the state of the music business today is just laughable. This record never gets the credit it deserves and even the periodicals that sang its praises upon release seem to dismiss its relevance when describing the catalog of Oasis
