SmoothJazz.com Review

We are pleased to welcome the latest from multi-instrumentalist, Bernie Kenerson, BERNIE GAME – The Art of the EWI. Dedicated to the graceful energy of the Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) Bernie presents 12 new tracks that create a Smooth, Contemporary Jazz venture. I enjoy the depth and passion of his compositions combined with the free spirit of his playing… The EWI is so retro it’s cool and in fact, Bernie uses elements of hip hop and jazz on songs like “Candle and Wine” to create a very sophisticated yet modern vibe. On his website he says, “I'm very influenced by the last fifty years of jazz… Bird, Coltrane, Miles, Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter and Smooth Jazz the likes of David Sanborn, Grover Washington, Tom Scott, Jeff Lorber Fusion, Najee, Kenny G, Boney James, George Howard, George Benson, Gato Barbieri, John Klemmer and The Yellowjackets.” While his EWI playing is mainly inspired by “Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Tom Schuman, Jan Hammer Bob Mintzer and Michael Brecker.” Bernie Kenerson is a jazz musician’s jazz musician… he’s keeping the dream alive and in perfecting the art of the EWI, he’s managed to capture classic, contemporary and smooth in one outing on this new winning collection, BERNIE GAME. For our friends in radio, check the edit of “Bernie Game” for your playlist. My favorite may be the melancholy glide, “I’ll Remember This Day,” but the entire collection is really what makes the light shine. Game on, Bernie!

What's His Secret?

Ok. The term "Jazz" is thrown around a lot, and seems to encompass so many sub-genres, styles and even mediums that when I see a new release bearing its name, I immediately put up my defenses. After a few listens to this album, I found myself forgetting all of that genre mumbo-jumbo and just really digging these grooves!

Bernie Game seems to have a little of everything, but yet somehow retains a singular focus, a feeling, a vibe. And it's a great vibe ~ from the bossa of Giant Jobim ('Trane chillin' by a lagoon in Rio?) to the straight-up funk of the title cut, I find myself returning to this playlist on my iPod again and again (good thing we can't wear records out anymore!).

The EWI is definitely an instrument I'm embarassed to say I know little about - and I plan to do my homework on this one. I think we'd be hard-pressed to find anyone out there with more facility on it, and I keep scouring the web for any hint of a challenger. Good luck catching up to this guy ~ Bernie Kenerson seems to have quite a head start, and you'd do yourself a great service to check out whatever he has to offer in the future. Well done!
