Great early 90s hip-hop
     

A great record that was shelved a long time ago, that finally got re-released. This is classic early 90s hip-hop with crashing beats and nice 2-bar jazz loops, the kind of hip-hop production that can't be done anymore because of sampling laws. The rhymes are interspersed with African words which add to the interesting effect. ZL were under Dave "Funken" Klein's wing, one of DJ Shadow's mentors. This record also includes the ultra-rare "Shadow's Legitimate Mix", DJ Shadow's first track.

Though Zimbabwe Legit was the first African group to record hip-hop in America, it's not their vocal talents that cause their lone 12" to fetch hundreds of dollars when it's available for auction online. Produced by Mista Lawnge from Black Sheep (and engineered by Scotty Hard), it included a remix from DJ Shadow and was his first appearance on record, back when he was still making the transition from Hollywood Records studio maven to independent producer and co-head of SoleSides Records.
