Enjoyable Tunage
by RandynhbThe new Annuals stuff is pretty darn good. I am a bigger fan of the randomness of some of their old music but this polished johnny on the spot stuff works too. Will be purchasing the new album.
just listen to it.
by terroreesaon first listen to this song, i was kind of surprised. Annuals have been my favorite band for at least a year now, and i see them live every chance i get. the wet zoo ep did have a glossy sheen or a certain polish to it that was absent from be he me. part of that is probably the new money they have with the major label record deal, but part of it is also the fact that they know what they're doing now and have a stronger musical direction. be he me admittedly lacked a little in editing; some sounds and effects were extraneous. 'sore' is a beautiful, polished song that reflects their new direction.
which leads us to this song, 'confessor,' the first single from their new album. a lot seems to be missing - there are relatively few of the quirky effects and noises that make be he me so interesting.
what the song does have, however, is the melody, harmony, and brilliantly unexpected cohesion of so many different instruments. if this song is any indicator, Adam Baker's songwriting seems more concise, and that is generally a good thing. although it's taken me a few listens to get used to the more polished 'professional' sound of the track, the elements that make it an Annuals song are all present. it bursts right in with a simple melody that sustains the entire song, and the guitar work on the track is incredible. particularly beautiful to my ears are the harmonies in the chorus - the space between the notes is filled by the instrumental accompaniment. if this track were played in the chapels mentioned in the lyrics, it would resonate and just fill the room with sound. it's not great (ie, there are no epic sweeps as in 'sore' and 'brother'), but it is very, very good. i can't wait for this album.
and i love the little 'yip' at the end of the first verse. so cute. :)
The Promise Is There...
by oatsIf the new record SOUNDS this good, we are all in for a treat. It's no "Sore" but really, you can't have every song be that good. Bring on the new record!
