Album Review
On their second album, Scritti Politti essentially was Green Gartside, who directed drummer Fred Maher, keyboardist David Gamson, and a multitude of studio musicians through a state-of-the-art, immaculately constructed set of catchy synth pop on Cupid & Psyche 85. The results are as impressive as Songs to Remember and produced the hit singles "Perfect Way" and "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)."

One of the Greatest pop albums of all time.
There really isn't enough I can say about this record. It's the single greatest synth pop album of the 80's and a monument to brilliance. If you only ever get one Scritti Politti cd ever, this is it. It was hugely influential on artists from Madonna, to Miles Davis to Trent Reznor, and is still a must-listen among the elite of hip-hop artists looking to show how to wrangle technology. Ranks up there with the best offerings of the Beatles and the Beach Boys in my list. All with Green Gartside's intelligent lyrics and astonishing vocals. A must-have!
midi master
back in the 80's, recording keyboards/drums/anything else that could be triggered was done via midi technology, the notes locked in time by a process called quantizing. scritti politti is an important band for one huge reason. i like green too, but david gamson is the reason this stuff is amazing. he is an absolute genious, by far the most brilliant midi era keyboardist (duran duran? please!). his rhythmic sophistication was unheard of, his programming/use of multiple sounds (again) beyond anyone else by a mile back then. That's the reason miles davis recorded with them -- he was completely blown away by "perfect way"
A total classic
If you haven't got this album you need to. Like other classics like Pet Sounds or Talking Book what Cupid & Psyche seems to define the coming of age of a generation of new technological possibility (for Green, that's sampling, FM synthesis and MIDI time coded sequencing). Each track is beautifully written and wonderfully produced. It's the sound of a producer and writer making excellent choices. It's never overworked. Alongside other lesser-known works of genius (see Lewis Taylor's eponymous debut for another example), this is one of those albums that people inside the music industry seem to appreciate more than the public. Get inside it and enjoy it - it's wonderful.
