Album Review

Expanding the latent arena rock sensibilities that peppered Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by slowing them down and stretching them to the breaking point, the Cure reached the peak of their popularity with the crawling, darkly seductive Disintegration. It's a hypnotic, mesmerizing record, comprised almost entirely of epics like the soaring, icy "Pictures of You." The handful of pop songs, like the concise and utterly charming "Love Song," don't alleviate the doom-laden atmosphere. The Cure's gloomy soundscapes have rarely sounded so alluring, however, and the songs — from the pulsating, ominous "Fascination Street" to the eerie, string-laced "Lullaby" — have rarely been so well-constructed and memorable. It's fitting that Disintegration was their commercial breakthrough, since, in many ways, the album is the culmination of all the musical directions the Cure were pursuing over the course of the '80s.

listen to this album in order

Disintigration is a perfect example of why you should listen to an album in order and in its entirety instead of cutting it up into singles. This is a near perfect album and after KissMeKissMeKissMe, The Cure returned to a deeper darker place that satisfied hard core The Cure fans and also proved to be very listenable and a bit mainstream but not too much so. Did Jake on the football team still like The Cure? Yes, but Ian in the goth crowd could still listen without feeling like a sell-out. What a freakin' great album, one of the best of the 80s hands down.

" A musical masterpiece"

The Cure has many great titles of work. The Head On The Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, And Pornography are excellent pieces of work. I have been a fan of The Cure since 1987. I have every album and have seen them live six times. Disintegration is a masterpiece in my humble opinion. The album's first song, "Plainsong" sets the tone for one of the geatest Cure albums ever recorded. "Picture of You", "Lovesong", "Lullaby", are classic hits from the band. "Prayers for Rain" and "Disintegration" are dark and powerful. The entire album is stellar. A must have for any fan!

Absolute Perfection

Vulnerability, hope, pain, longing, and a host of other emotions when I listen to Disintegration...I've listened to this album for 15+ years and it has helped me through alienation in high school, soul searching in college, and continues to inspire me in the middle-aged years. It's a dreary collection of songs, but very uplifting for me. This album is absolute perfection.

Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, few were as enduring and popular as the Cure. Led through numerous incarnations by guitarist/vocalist Robert Smith (born April 21, 1959), the band became notorious for its slow, gloomy dirges and Smith's ghoulish...
