iTunes Review

After a wonderfully strange and exotic self-titled debut in 2003, L.A.’s Dengue Fever followed up with the equally exotic and compelling Escape From Dragon House. Founders and brothers Zac (guitar) and Ethan Holtzman (keys) lead a band of musicians through expertly translated musical milieus originating in Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, and America, with jazz, pop and psychedelia smoothly intermingling and melding like exotic spices in a simmering stew. The fantastically evocative voice of Cambodian émigré Chhon Nimol starts things off on “We Were Gonna” with a sinewy display of vocal work, weaving in and out of the psych-pop guitars and Farfisa organs the carry the song. Faintly recalled ‘60s dance moves will serve you well during “Sni Bong;” the steamy “Sleepwalking Through the Mekong” snakes provocatively, like a tepid river; and the brilliant “One Thousand Years of a Tarantula” is standout psychedelic rock. Their cover of the Cambodian pop gem, “Tip My Canoe” features Zac Holtzman doing a bang-up job singing with Nimol, and the track bubbles with a shy, infectious joy. Ditto the whole darn record.

This band's first album was awesome and they have done it again. Wow. I can listen to this no matter what mood I'm in and find just what I need. Kids were dancing to Sni Bong at my son's 15th birthday party, Made of Steam evokes sighs of love's melancholy, Sleepwalking Through the Mekong makes you feel like you are doing just that, and there is no better mix of the exotic and the psychedelic than 1000 Years of the Tarantula. Dengue Fever has been a favorite band of mine since I first heard them. Do yourself a favor and catch the fever...

This is awesome! I loved these songs since I was a little kid- Dengue Fever twist on these classic Khmer songs are great! For all those people out there (especially Khmer Americans) give this album a try. I promise you'll love it. My Favorite song is Tip my Canoe- I enjoyed the male singer- I give him props for singing in Khmer. BUY IT GUYS.

Even when you consider the cultural cross-pollination that goes on in large metropolitan areas, L.A.'s Dengue Fever had perhaps the strangest genesis of any band in recent memory. They are left-field enough for a group of white musicians to cover psychedelic rock oldies from Cambodia, but finding a bona...
