iTunes Review

On his first solo outing in 1971, Rod Stewart kept things loose and limber, freely mixing acoustic folk, raw R&B, and thrash-'n'-bash rock. Every Picture Tells a Story found Rod the Mod in irrepressibly high spirits, kicking up his heels with Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane and other friends. You can hear the smile in Stewart's voice as he romps through his misadventures on the title tune. His joyful rasp lends "That's All Right" and "(I Know I'm) Losing You" real sweat and swagger. The ballads are just as effective. Stewart's readings of "Reason to Believe" and "Tomorrow is Such a Long Time" are achingly tender. "Mandolin Wind" reverberates with a sweetly nostalgic air. And, of course, there's "Maggie May," Rod's rocking toast to schoolboy romance that roses to the top of the charts. Truth is, Stewart fills every performance on Every Picture with a passionate sincerity that's irresistible.

Rod's Best

by Ratjet

Every picture told a story and still does 38 years later. For those of us who grew up listening to this - or those of you who discovered it later, Rod's voice and Ron Wood's music are some of the best of all time. As you see from these reviews, Maggie May will always bring us back to what we were doing when we first heard it. Who can not hear that music and think of how it impacted their life.

Just enjoy and listen to all the other underated cuts from this timeless classic.

looking back

it's great to look back at records that we have listened to in the past but why are two songs missing that appeared on the original?

38 years of listening and still not board with it

by Meemfish

I've been listening to this album for the last 38 years (yes I'm that old!) and it still rates among my all time favorite music. To those of you who think Rod is a has been lose the 'tude, his voice is still worthy of the torch songs he's singing today. Think about how people's voices change over their lives and compare it to his contemporaries and note whether they still have vital careers. This is a classic, I'd put it in a time capsule without a second thought. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Rod Stewart may have begun his career as a respected singer, yet that critical respect eroded as he got older, as he became more concerned with stardom and adult contemporary songcraft than the rock music that launched him. While he has recorded some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely...
