Album Review

Released in September 2005, Hinder's Extreme Behavior revives the riffs and misogynistic tone of 2001 albums from Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback for a whole new batch of undergrads. This isn't so much post-grunge as it is straight-up dude rock. The artwork is a triggered response collage of lingerie and Jäger, and the music blares like a stereo left on in the keg room, all swear words and electric guitar blab. Hinder singer Austin Winkler is a stand-in for Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, and his lyrics? Like the chorus of lead single "Get Stoned" that asserts sex is better when the participants are angry and high, Winkler doesn't show a lot of class on Behavior. Hinder do try a little tenderness here and there. They sound like a heavier Wallflowers on "Nothin' Good About Goodbye," and "Lips of an Angel" carries the power ballad torch complete with a soaring solo stolen from hair metal's golden era. "Homecoming Queen" is another take on the good-girl-tarnished-by-big-bad-L.A. story; it's also a pretty obvious rewrite of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine." For the most part, Hinder are all about big dumb rock, the kind of stuff that's happily ignorant of common courtesy or trying much of anything new musically.

Do we really need another Nickelback?

This run-of-the-mill rock has got to stop. Rather, we need to stop buying it. I heard all of the vocal lines and chord progressions in "Extreme Behavior" last year on Nickelbacks album and six years ago in everything else. Hinder fails to create anything new, and you people still buy it by the truckload.

Listening Hinder's uninspired lyrics and guitar-heavy mix makes me go numb the same way that pounding my head with a rubber mallet would. Cliche ridden and unclever riffs plauge this record to death and reach their peak on "Lips of an Angel," which falls flat on it's perfect little face in an attempt to be inspirational.

Don't waste your money on songs that are only slightly different from stuff you already heard just because it's comfortable. Spend it on a working band that makes NEW music. And, then, listen to it more than once. You will soon grow to like new things. I promise...

A MUST HAVE!!!

I first heard Hinder through iTunes' free download of "Get Stoned". I really liked it so I checked out the rest of the tracks on the album. I'm into a lot of different music, mostly rock though, and I can say without any doubt that this album is probably the TOP rock record of the year! There isn't one "skip-worthy" or "filler" track on here. Every song is really good and you can easily listen to it all the way through without reaching for the next button on your 'Pod. Trust me, GET IT!!!

Un-original and bland at best!

I cannot believe this crap could be liked by anybody.....not even the 13 year old kids that think this is Metal or Hard Rock......all this is Pop with drop D tuned guitars and the same 'i'm hurt' lyrics.

So bland, so un-original, so tedious; this has been done so many time before and by bands 10 times better. Thankfully Deftones have a new album out soon and Hinder will be forgotten and no-doubt this CD will become available for $3.00 at many second hand music stores.....even that will be too much though.

Biography

Formed: Oklahoma City, OK

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Hinder began crafting cocky, raucous post-grunge in the early 2000s, when Oklahoma City residents Joe Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson found Austin Winkler singing cover songs at a college party. The three formed the nucleus of Hinder, and the group started landing gigs opening locally for such bands as Theory of a Deadman. Lineup changes brought guitarist Mark King and bassist Mike Rodden into the fold, and the quintet signed with Universal after issuing a self-released EP. Their 2005 full-length...
