To each his own

Ok so. As a massive Kaizer's Orchestra fan, I was rather surprised when I listened to this. If you too decided to give it a listen because of Kaizer's be warned: it's .... completely different. I approached the album expecting to hear songs about mental institutions and russian roulette. Instead, I found love ballads.

However, if you aren't waiting for the pump organ to queue in, then this album is rather charming. He has a cool voice which he, as always, uses beautifully with the melody. A few of the songs are genuinely original in their style, something that's rare these days.

Admittedly the entire album isn't amazing. Some songs fall into the stereotypical rhythm and chords we hear over and over again. Still, Ottesen manages to occasionally strike odd and gorgeous tunes that make this stand out. I'd recommend Black and White Movie, Juliet, Neighbour Boy, and (despite lyrical lameness) Go Tell Her. This City Kills just annoys me, not sure why. If you're angsty you'll like Tickets.

So if you like the singer/songwriter style, then click away. If you crave the haunting echos of someone beating the hell out of an oil barrel with a crowbar... um... this probably isn't your cup of tea.

Definitely worth the $9.99 (and then some!)

I couldn't help but fall in love with Janove Ottesen ever since I first heard "This City Kills". Each song is fairly catchy, and the vocals are nice to listen to. His voice isn't changed by the studio, and you can tell it's original. The lyrics are simple, fun, and easy to start singing along with. Plus, I love the acoustic guitar and the mellow feel it contributes.

Never gets boring

I've owned this album since right after it came out, play it very regularly, and I just never get tired of it. One of my all-time favorites.
