Steve Jablonsky is phenomenal. The music he wrote for this game truely does make the game. it wouldnt have been nearly as succesful without this outstanding score. You can picture what is happening while listening to this score. Briliant work Mr. Jablonsky!

Steve Jablonsky doesn't phone this one in--it's great music even for non-gamers.

Let's be honest, Steve Jablonsky has better things to do with his time than create video game soundtracks. As a professional Hollywood composer, he's scored films ranging from the Transformers franchise to The Island. With a career dedicated to the big screen, it would be all-too-easy to just phone it in and produce a half-assed job for the gamers. This is what makes Gears of War 2's soundtrack such a pleasant surprise: it's a fantastic effort. Sure, it may not win major accolades from classical musicians, but it is easily on par with his big screen efforts and, in some cases, exceeds them. What Jablonsky achieves on the Gears of War 2 soundtrack is a mixture of subtle tension brushing against abject desperation. Each track has a character of its own, while remaining unified through the dedicated foundations of percussive brass. "Hold them off" is a prime example of Jablonsky's range, utilizing punching orchestral hits on top of muted steel bar strikes, creating a series of pulses throughtout the piece. "Hope Runs Deep" and "Armored Prayer" each reflect the kind of grand, swelling themes we would expect for soldiers riding into battle, but the real treasure is Jablonsky's fearlessness in switching gears (so to speak) in mid-song, picking up the pace or dropping it just enough to remind the listener that the song has a story. "Hell Breaks Loose" and "Bedlam" are odd misnomers, as their titles imply anarchical loss of control, whereas they are among the most tightly coordinated pieces on the soundtrack, linking loud percussion hits with orchestral themes as the bridge. And just when the loud, action-oriented pieces become overbearing, "Hollow," "Denizens of the Deep," and "With Sympathy" bring the mood back down with the same slow melodic pensiveness of mixed lilting vocals and giant swells of brass emotion. Finally, "Autumn of Mankind" recreates the main theme as a piano sonata. Overall, it's a very tasteful score that is packe with surprises and brings an generally higher quality to video game soundtracks. In short, it is better than any video game soundtrack has any right to be.
