Album Review
The Hush Sound's emphasis on mature, piano-driven pop makes them a rarity on the Fueled by Ramen roster, where the punk-pop sounds of Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco reign supreme. With songs like "Medicine Man" and "Honey," Goodbye Blues distances the band even further from their Ramen brethren, adding shades of old-timey swing music and torch song balladry to their catalog. Returning fans will still take comfort in the Hush Sound's usual mix of co-ed vocals and jaunty songcraft, but the group also shows a willingness to experiment that few of their labelmates possess. With pianist/vocalist Greta Salpeter at the wheel, Goodbye Blues opens with the aptly-named "Intro," an early morning ballad that sounds destined for playback on a Victrola, before launching into the snappy "Honey." The bouncing piano chords and semi-jazzy harmonies evoke a sense of 1930s Americana, and while that feeling has mostly waned by the album's second half, it gives the album enough momentum to sustain the weaker moments on Side B. Most of those limitations show up in the songs helmed by guitarist Robert Morris, whose vocals are certainly competent — particularly when flanked by the harmonies of his three bandmates, all of whom sing — but can't claim to be as unique or as endearing as Salpeter's throaty alto. The songwriting duties on Goodbye Blues were split, a result of the group's short-lived decision to disband, and Morris' contributions can't quite rival those of his bandmate. With a breakup looming on the horizon in 2006, Morris and Salpeter scrambled to write their own songs, intending to use that material to launch their respective solo careers. The Hush Sound ultimately stayed together, however, and those solo tunes became the building blocks of their third album. So while Goodbye Blues is one of the most mature releases in recent Ramen history, it's not altogether cohesive, with Morris' songs all but banishing Salpeter's piano in favor of guitar-based progressions (and, by extension, banishing the one thing that helps the band truly stand out). But when the bandmates are on — when Greta Salpeter leads her boys through the sexy stomp of "The Boys Are Too Refined" and the poppy big band strains of "Medicine Man" — they come across as the co-ed equivalent of Jack's Mannequin, which is worlds away from being the sibling band to Straylight Run.

Amazaing!
by MyChemFan1This is one of my favorite CDs of all time, And I listen to at least one of these songs everyday. This band blows my mind, with Greta's singing skills and Bob's soulful vocals, not to mention other two amazing bandmates!
Yet another great album by The Hush Sound!!
by millyvinillyWords cannot describe how much i love this band! Goodbye Blues is definitely a GREAT cd, but isn't my favorite by THS. Maybe it's because there's hardly any Bob songs. 11 of these songs are Greta songs, but I still love them because Greta's voice got a lot stronger between this CD and Like Vines. Here's my rating of each song:
1. Intro (8.5/10) - A good way to start off the cd. The piano playing reminds me of the piano at my grandma's old house. You can tell just from this short song how much Greta's voice has changed.
2. Honey (9/10) - A very addicting song that's really fun. The oohs in the background at 2:28- 2:53 remind me of the oompa loomas from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and always put a smile on my face.
3. Medicine Man (10/10) - The first song i EVER heard by THS and i love it!!! It makes me think of the Wild West. The tambourine and bass are so catchy. The only problem is when Greta sings the words "medicine man" towards the end, and is trying to sound all powerful or something. It just sounds really weird, but this still is probably one of my favorites on the cd.
4. The Boys Are Too Refined (9/10) - A good song with a lot of Bob backup vocals. The piano is really strong and stands out in this song.
5. Hurricane (8/10) - A slow but pretty song. I don't listen to it very much cause it's kinda boring. Maybe someday it will grow on me though.
6. As You Cry (10/10) - Yay for the first Bob song on the CD!!!! It's got a really good beat and i love the way Bob sings each word.
7. Six (Interlude) (8/10) - No singing in this song. It kind of sounds like elevator music, but I like to listen to it when i'm doing homework or trying to fall asleep.
8. Molasses (10/10) - I really like this song!!! Greta's voice and the lyrics work really well.
9. That's Okay (10/10) - One of the only two songs by THS that has ever made me cry. It's really pretty, but makes me think about somebody considering suicide. But it also reminds me of the book My Sister's Keeper.
10. Not Your Concern (10/10) - Anything by Bob is amazing!! I love when he sings "How can you dream in the doorway without ever going in?" The lyrics are about telling a clingy person to back off, which I think a lot of people can relate to.
11. Love You Much Better (10/10) - Aahh I love this song so much!!! It's so upbeat and about wanting somebody who's with somebody awful for them. Kind of like a classier "You Belong With Me". I can relate so much :D. I love the guys ba da da's and ooh la la la's .
12. Hospital Bed Crawl (10/10) - Probably my favorite Bob song on the cd. It sounds so nostalgic, if that makes any sense. Ever since i saw on a fan website that people think this song was written about Twilight, I can't stop thinking of it in that way. I know THS would never write a song about a popular modern day book, but the lyrics are so Bella/Edward.
13. Break The Sky (10/10) - Another amazingly catchy song. Greta's voice sounds more powerful, kinda like it did in Medicine Man, but it works this time.
14. You Are My Home (8.5/10) - A good song, but there isn't really anything special about it.
15. Pretty Down To Your Bones (9/10) - Really great for a bonus track. I always find myself tapping my foot along with this one.
Overall a great cd and if you are contemplating on wether or not to buy it or any of the songs, JUST DO IT!!! :]
Wow!
by dramageek5As a fan of The Hush Sound since So Sudden, I was happily surprised with this album. Greta's vocals are better than I've ever heard them. Medicine Man, The Boys are too Refined, and Honey all show off this. I love Bob, but his songs were weak compared to hers. Anyway, fantastic album. Can't wait for more.
