Album Review
Despite their dated white polyester clothes and androgynous makeup, Angel had surprising talent and range for a group whose initial purpose was to be some sort of divine answer to Kiss. That being said, their sound was far from original and was highly derivative of other top acts of the time, including Kiss themselves. So on Helluva Band you get the Queen-like "Feelin' Right," the Emerson, Lake & Palmer-meets-acoustic-Yes of "The Fortune," and the dreadful Boston boogie of "Anyway You Want It." The rest is poppy and commercial rock, which was more accomplished than the gender-bending glam metal that would follow them in the '80s, yet not quite as good as the best material of their '70s peers. Helluva Band has some intriguing moments, especially from progressively minded keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, but most would be just as satisfied with Anthology.

The Title sums it up
Angel truly was / is a Helluva Band. This release in the 70's won fan acclaim as best new artist. Circus magazine readers voted Angel ahead of Boston as best new group. Of course we all know now that Boston went on to fame and fortune, while Angel couldn't break into the mainstream of rock radio in those days. The biggest reason they couldn't acheive this was because they didn't compromise their musical style to fit into radio playlist (they did that later on White Hot and Sinful). Not that Boston compromised, but we are talking two different styles here. Boston was a little more radio friendly. Helluva Band kicks off with a live show favorite Feelin' Right which is highlighted by Punky Meadows (guitar) and Gregg Giuffria (keyboards) trading chops on their instruments. The Fortune may be Angel's signature song (many will say Tower is the song most representative of Angel) as it embodies everything that Angel is about. The keyboard introduction to this number and the wailing vocals of Frank Dimino make this a classic song in the vein of Stairway to Heaven. My favorites are Dr. Ice and Pressure Point where drummer Barry Brandt and Meadows are at their best. You will enjoy this music. Download them all.
Helluva Band is right.
I agree that they had talent and range like the album reviewer says. This was indeed a Helluva Album. “Feelin Right” is a good concert song with dueling Gee-tar and Lead Guitar. They had a good combo of electronic, metal, vocals that made me buy this album the next day after hearing it on an FM station’s Midnight album feature. A refreshing change from bands regurgitating a chat over and over. They were the Knights in White Satin and gave great concerts. “Feelings” is a great song that changes the pace and showed the talents of their vocals and keyboards. Glam Rock, progressive, Hair metal what ever you want to call them this is one Helluva band and is worth the look. :@)
ANGEL GREAT LIVE SHOWS
Angel was a great LIVE show. I remember seeing them as an opening act back in the 70's and had many of their LP's. Theatrics and intense stage shows put these guys way ahead of their time in the mid 70's. Great costumes and theatrics made them truley the forefathers of the big hair bands of the 80's. This was heavy metal 10 years ahead of thier time. They just never could hit a commercial sound that many people can even remmber them for, or anything that could get much radio air play time. But what a show these guys could put on. I remembered enough to come back and look them up. They truley were a HELLUVA BAND.
