Album Review

Belle & Sebastian's second record, If You're Feeling Sinister, is, for all intents and purposes, really their first, since their debut in 1996 was not heard outside of privileged inner circles. And If You're Feeling Sinister really did have quite a bit of an impact upon its release in 1996, largely because during the first half of the '90s the whimsy and preciousness that had been an integral part of alternative music was suppressed by grunge. Whimsy and preciousness are an integral part of If You're Feeling Sinister, along with clever wit and gentle, intricate arrangements — a wonderful blend of the Smiths and Simon & Garfunkel, to be reductive. Even if it's firmly within the college, bed-sit tradition, and is unabashedly retrogressive, that gives Sinister a special, timeless character that's enhanced by Stuart Murdoch's wonderful, lively songwriting. Blessed with an impish sense of humor, a sly turn of phrase, and an alluringly fey voice, he gives this record a real sense of backbone, in that its humor is far more biting than the music appears and the music is far more substantial that it initially seems. Sinister plays like a great forgotten album, couched in '80s indie, '90s attitude, and '60s folk-pop. It's beautifully out of time, and even if other Belle & Sebastian albums sound like it, this is where they achieved a sense of grace.

Even better live?

I've always said a band that's not good live is not a good band. Ashlee Simpson is a good example of this; radio hits in the studio then getting booed off the stage live. Belle and Sebastian, in fact, sounds better live. With the tempo a bit faster and the uncertainty factor elevated, B&S shine on this record. The slightly off-tune vocals only add to their overall sound, and, fortunately for us, the crowd is appreciative (and generally stops clapping when they should). The building up of their songs is probably what makes them so enjoyable; usually quiet and acoustic to start, most of them end up in hard-strummed guitar, happy vocals, and even a little harmonica here. Many compare B&S to other bands, and while that's valid, I've yet to hear a band with such a distinct sound, soothing music, skilled songwriting, care for their music, attention to detail, and energy all in one package. "Low" may be soothing, but lacks the energy. "The Strokes" have a distinct sound but don't care. Basically, anyone who is remotely interested in good, mainstream (although not initially) indie-orchestral pop should buy this album, blast it on a good stereo system (although blast may not be the word for them...), dance to songs 2, 3, and 10 (after it picks up), become pensive to songs 4, 7, and 9, and cry to songs 10 (before it picks up), and 5. Do whatever you want with 1, 6, and 8. Please enjoy!!

VERY IMPRESSIVE

I bought the original a while ago, love it, and i do believe that some of the songs are even better live!! (as opposed to most bands who are quite dissapointing live) There are definitely subtle differences in the song: IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER loses some of its effortless and innocent sound by the sheer virtue of playing live with an audience, instead it becomes a sort of offbeat march (though not a bad thing at all), and the energy in ME AND THE MAJOR is palpable and fun. And these 2 in particular have changes in instrumentation that make them much more dynamic songs. In general....BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

I was at this show, It was a great experience.

I had just gotten off the plane so I was a bit delrious from jetlag to start with, and the excitement of being in London. I saw this in Time out and hustled to get there, took a chance that there would be a scalper outside and there were none. So I waited for a last chance ticket at the willcall booth, chatting with a girl who worked in a lingerie store in Kensington, the excitement was building. I didnt get a ticket neither did anyone else in line, they all split so I was thoroughly forlorn, but hence even more in the mood to see B and S. so I decided to stay and watch the monitors in the lobby. After three songs I met a Scottish dude leaving early who said he knew me from glasgow. Never been to glasgow but the dude must have owed my scottish twin a favor cause he showed me how to sneek in past the barbican guards. I sat in the back by these really loud girls singing along to every amazing song. At the end of the show They got called up on stage to dance and I tagged along like I came there with them. They blanked me like the weirdo I am when I tried to dance with them, and I got hit in the face with a paper airplane made out of a progame. But what an amazing show! and a memory to cherish.

A band that takes its name from a French children's television series about a boy and his dog would almost have to be precious, and to be certain, Belle & Sebastian are precious. But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes...
