They call him the "the Argentine Bob Dylan"...

...and rightly so, after spending two years in Argentina, a close friend introduced me to this artist and as soon as I heard that riff in "El Fantasma..." (the one right at the end of the preview) I was hooked.

I'll say it right out: I'd send Leon Gieco into the ring with any folk/protest-y/counter-culture musician and/or band that America has produced. The historical context is a large measure of the album's strength. While American artists were protesting a horribly but quite distant war, Gieco writes in "Solo Le Pido a Dios" the following "I only ask of God/that the pain of others will not become indifferent to me..." It was the pain of coming of age in a land that had not known peace in a generation. And that generation speaks on this track. When the audience joins in the chorus in the song's last verse, I just choke up.

The album is full of fantastic and ascessable music, and if you've been thinking of branching out, this album is a great place to start.

Excelente Album.

Argentina's Bob Dylan, oh yeah...

Well, because it's such a small group of iTunes listeners he might not be heard so much. This guy is amazing. Love it. Get it. Support it!

Biography

Genre: World

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Argentine folk legend León Gieco is one of his country's most enduring national heroes. He first earned these comparisons with his debut album, León Gieco (1973),...
