iTunes Review
Coming off a successful 2006 tour and looking to capitalize on the positive vibes, learned chemistry and raw energy of a group running on all cylinders, Ben Harper booked the Innocent Criminals into the recording studio for quick work. The resulting album, 2007’s Lifeline, was recorded and mixed at Studio Gang studios in Paris in seven days to a 16-track analog tape machine without the aid of computers. Not surprisingly, given the live methods and Harper’s own predilection for ‘60s and ‘70s soul influences, the album reflects the intimacy of a well-schooled, instrumentally solid group working behind a singer who knows the magic remains with the song. Shades of gospel, country, blues and folk inform each tune, with “Say You Will,” “Put It On Me” and “Heart of Matters” turning towards funk and soul, while “Fight Outta You” and “Fool for a Lonesome Train” tilt towards country-folk. But all styles flow through Harper who sings with confidence but never cockiness, allowing his bandmates their space to keep things moving forward.

Beautiful
BHIC do it once again. This album is beautiful!!! I love everything about it...I love that they recorded it on all analog equipment and had to do it in one take many times for it to work right. You can certainly tell in the recordings that analog is always the way to go. When he is playing "Paris Sunrise #7" it is as if he is in the room with you playing. Ben is a rare treat to all of us that have followed his career and he literally makes life just a little better whenever he is playing through my speakers...Lifeline is no exception!
different, but great
this is just one of the many directions that ben harper and the innocent criminals have taken to mix up their feel. style, and sound to create something beautiful. ben harper has done it again and released a create collection of songs that sounds great from beginning to end. the key to this cd (for me) was listening all the way through and understanding the contruction of the tracks strung together. simply amazing.
Incredible
I know the music of Ben Harper only occasionally (from songs like "Forever" and "Steal My Kisses"). But this music is absolutely incredible. I classify Ben Harper along with Stephen Kellogg as two of the most talented men in music right now.
