My Esteemed Traveler: Native American Flute and Sakuhachi
This album is a gift which bings me serenity and a wish to spend my days in the quiet solitude of nature....
A somewhat melodically abstract album: 3 STARS.
A somewhat melodically abstract album: 3 STARS. I wish I could give this album five stars. Martindale’s musicianship is quite good. And the overall sound of his flutes is excellent. But I don’t care for most of his compositions. Many of them have an abstract feel. I believe it was Steve Stills who wrote those open-ended melodies for the group, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But those songs worked because they sang close harmony on those tunes, making the tunes musically interesting. Martindale doesn’t have this option, since it’s, for the most part, a solo Native American flute album. Only on the last tune, Track 15, Into the Sunset, does his solo work take fire as he steps away from the solo treatment and plays with an acoustic guitar.
But the album is far from bad. I believe he plays the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, on Pleasant Journey, Track 6. He does a great job on this haunting tune. Track 8, Bamboo Garden, is also done on the shakuhachi, and very nicely done. This album seems to indicate Dr. Martindale is more comfortable with the shakuhachi than the NA flute. I suggest he makes a shakuhachi album. I’m willing to bet it would be great!
