Jazzy and Original!
Conlon Nancarrow passed away in 1997 after a long life of creating original, challenging and almost always really fun music. He's well known in the "new music" community especially for his insanely difficult passage work, not really intended to be played live by a human: in many cases, as represented on this album by the Continuum folks, he intended mechanical means to produce this music. He's identifiably American--though he lived much of his life in Mexico--primarily because of frequent use of jazz idioms. At times he reminds me of the virtuoso side of Barber--"Prelude and Blues" is an example of that--or Bolcom. He has all of their wit and maybe a little cooler temperament. I especially enjoy Piece No. 2 for Small Orchestra on this recording. Listen to the samples: you'll be able to tell instantly if he's your cup of tea.
