iTunes Review

The 1980s resurgence continues. Raleigh, NC’s Rosebuds — the duo of guitarist Ivan Howard and keyboardist Kelly Crisp — pay tribute to OMD, New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen with their dancefloor friendly third album Night of the Furies. The duo have slowly and steadily been building towards this indirect homage. Drummer abandonment issues have turned them away from the primal pop of their debut album, Make Out, and towards a slowly penetrating melodic groove. (Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan and Lee Waters play drums on most tracks with a machine filling in for the rest.) With no guaranteed rhythm section, Howard and Crisp allow atmospherics to supply the friction. “Get Up Get Out” generates a driving energy, but its pulsing keyboard shimmers serve as the potent lure. The gentle keyboard chirps and swirling sirens underlying “Hold On To This Coat” flesh out the deliberately cold, new wave melody. Distance and intrigue carry these tunes. Lyrically, they hurtle through the centuries, playing dead, imagining epitaphs, recounting days at sea while finally teasing, “I ruined my life, but you wouldn’t want to see it.” Well, actually, we would.

New Style = Amazing

I'm not a huge fan of the Rosebuds, but for the love of their song 'Boxcar' I checked this out and I'm very impressed. Their moving away from the acoustic tone of their previous two albums and incorporating a spacey/orchrestra/electric (not techno) sound. This dark horse of an album is beating out some of the "highly anticipated" albums so far this year. Highly recommended, just sample a few songs and you'll be blown away by the strength of their sound, you go Rosebuds.

Joy Division comparison?

After reviewing the songs on this album, I feel compelled to comment to the tired, cliched use of Joy Division and other 80s post-punk bands to compare all forms of contemporary indie/alternative rock music. It's getting a little old.

Not to mention, the Rosebuds sound nothing like Joy Division! New Order, okay. Pet Shop Boys that's fine. But this band sounds nothing like Joy Division.

Amazing Album!!!!

I am big fan of The Rosebuds, past and present music. Not to immediately compare this new album to that of others, but in order to give the reader a better sense, think of Joy Division, New Order, and Pet Shop Boys wrapped together with the The Rosebuds' own brandmark sound. There also are many shoegazing guitar sounds, which make the album sound larger-than-life, spacey, and ambient. Kelly and Ivan were definately in a cool mood when they recorded these songs! I'm not a musician myself so hopefully what I just said is understood! ;)

Biography

Formed: May, 2001 in Wilmington, NC

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Indie rock trio the Rosebuds formed in May 2001, shortly after Ivan Howard (vocals/guitars) and Kelly Crisp (keyboards) met while in college in Wilmington, NC. They moved to Raleigh that fall and enlisted drummer Billy Alphin (of Ashley Stove). After a split 7", nearby Merge Records discovered their demo in early 2003 and later released Make Out, their debut full-length, in October. Following that recording, Alphin left the group and was replaced by Jonathan Bass, who himself was replaced by Lee...
