Album Review
The finest of Labelle's original albums, Nightbirds was recorded in New Orleans with funkmeister Allen Toussaint handling the production chores and, one assumes, members of the Meters taking care of the session work. Worth the price of admission for the Bob Crewe-written "Lady Marmalade" alone, the album veers between the strutting New Orleans, horn-laden singles and more mainstream pop material.

Solid Soul From LaBelle and Co.
Somewhere in between Aretha's upper-cut and Laura Nyro's jab lies this solid, funky and diverse LP of soul music from Patti LaBelle and co. Strong vocals, harmonies and immunity to disco excess ought to warrant it more listenability than it seems to get. The one that everyone remembers is "Lady Marmalade," though "What Can I Do For You" is just as groovy while it at the same time carries lyrical depth. "All Girl Band" is similar, a reflection on the struggle and sacrifice of young women who pursue their dreams of making music. "You Turn Me On" is a super soulful 3/4 ballad that caps the album nicely. Fans of Motown, Stax and especially the pre-disco Philly sound are encouraged to seek this one out.
"Gitcha Gitcha Ya Ya Da Da!"
.."Gitcha Gitcha Ya Ya Here!"..Oohh; Yeah! I so called this LP to be "A Hit" when I first heard it! {'Course it didn't hurt Patti La Belle & The Bluebells to be Re-Invented so Masterfully by Alan Toussaint and his Crescent City house band; The Meters!} Female Urban Soul+Second Line Stroll=Several Smash Singles! "What Can I Do For You?" & "You Turn Me On" are showpiece numbers done with Sass & Style! LaBelle had a good run for themselves back in the "Swingin' Seventies!" "Nightbirds" served to form their new image as "Space Children"; sort of like "The Glittery Ziggy Stardust Girls Of R&B!" They would have more Concerts & Hits; But no characters as downright irresitable (and danceable!) as "The Creole Lady Marmalade!" "Yeah; You Right!"; This one is truly a "Soulful Seventies Set!"...by Grimmbo.
My Life Was All About Labelle
I remember in 1974 I was walking down the street with my BF and I passed by a local record store who had speakers outside, I heard for the very first time, Lady Marmelade. Remember when you had your first orgasm? It was better than that. I bought the vinyl album, brought it home and wore that sucker out. Then came the album NightBird, then Chameleon. I saw them in person in Boston. My first love is Diana Ross and The Supremes, but clearly my second is Labelle. They were musical revolutionary whose every song had a driving, mesmerizing beat, but also had a societal message.
This album I have on vinyl. CD and now my Ipod. My absolutely favorite song on this album over all these years still is What Can I Do For You.
The overall best song on the three Labelle albums mentioned above is Messing With My Mind on the Chameleon album. If I had to choose between a sandwich and the NIghtbird Album, I would take the album hands down.
