Album Review

The second full-length album from this enigmatic Santa Monica DJ/producer continues his exploration of curiously pleasant post-electronic musique concrète. "Post-electronic," because his source material tends to be analog rather than digital — accordions, reed instruments, toy percussion, and samples from old LPs covering a wide variety of musical styles. But while Daedelus' music partakes of the collage aesthetic of 20th-century musique concrète, the results are invariably easy on the ear, and sometimes quite melodically sophisticated even when the rhythms are jungly or the textures glitchy. The interaction of jittery drum'n'bass rhythms, and bass clarinet on "Scaling Snowdon" is one such example, as is the funky but sweet 1970s movie-soundtrack flavor of "Taking Wing." "Overdressed" flirts with chaotic drill'n'bass, but in a gentle way, and the similarly quirky "Was Waiting" flirts with being an actual song, but in a rather demented way. The whole album leaves you feeling a bit bewildered, but strangely happy. How Daedelus does this is a mystery, and it would probably be best if it remained one.

Chilling adventures in Snowdonia

I am no auditory guru, but Of Snowdonia is full of sheer brilliance as Daedelus always presents. Snowdonia takes us back to an imaginary land full of adventure, purity and youthfull grandure. When all the tracks are wound together they seem to be spit out in a mathmatical rythmn with the aperture wide open. A must listen to all the way through. Enjoy.

Music was just sound..until now.

Genius must be his bottom line. The songs are light on the ears, and most have sort of a pseudo-preschool sound;despite this, they are also abstract and rebellious. It is an amazing album and shows that Daedelus is the Beethoven of the 21st century.Bask in this music, because you won't find it's natural one-man-orchestra sound in the fingerfood albums that gunk up the radio.

Biography

Born: Santa Monica, CA

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

Born Alfred Weisberg-Roberts in Santa Monica, CA, producer/instrumentalist Daedelus wanted to be an inventor from an early age, a sentiment that led to him choosing an artistic moniker (in Greek mythology, Daedalus was known as an inventor, although Weisberg-Roberts also cites the character Stephan Dedalus in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man — as well as the ship in the Japanese cartoon Robotech — as equally valid reasons for his selection) when he began releasing...
