Album Review

Patti LaBelle's solo debut for Epic closed the book on a 15-year collaboration with Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash. She mixed light pop and soul covers on this outing, turning in earnestly sung renditions of "You Are My Friend" and the Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You," but also doing curious material like "Dan Swit Me" and "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover." LaBelle was still finding her niche and had not become entirely comfortable, and her later commonplace tendencies — such as the drawn-out lyric emphasis, embellishments, and lengthy holding of notes — had not been established yet.

The first of many

the first patti labelle solo effort in 1977. This album shows patti's range from high to low! this album is good for those who want to hear a younger Patti.

Preview of things to come

It's not surprising this is an uneven album, but no one salvages filler like Patti, so it's still a fairly enjoyable effort. The standouts are obvious: "Joy to Have Your Love" is often revived on later compilations, and it's easy to see why, as this Ray Parker Jr. funk-fest gives Patti room to work and she WORKS it! "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" is an oddly effective experiment that can hold its own with most Dylan covers, and offsets the more conventional song selection that dominates (i.e. "Since I Don't Have You", which Patti renews nonetheless). The momentum isn't sustained throughout the album, but the highlights are effectively showcased to open and close Ms. LaBelle's first solo effort in style.

A year later, following the additions of vocalists Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the group was rechristened the Blue Belles; with producer...
