Classical Gas

by Jim Hendershot

This is the original version of the song, and is a great recording by Mason Williams. The transition to digital is very good, and I'm enjoying listening to an old favorite! Younger listeners not familiar with this song may recognize it as the theme playing in the movie "The Dish" when they first fire up the tracking system. Certainly worth every penny of the 99 cents the iTunes store charges!

What a Trip!

I grew up in the early 70s listening to my dad play this album along with some other great 60s music. I am so glad I can have this on my ipod now! The musical genius of Mason Williams is evident throughout the album (Classical Gas being the standout). However, for me every song on this album is a genuine trip down memory lane - Prince's Panties cracks me up every time, just like it did when I was a kid. A must have!

Watch and Hear Classical Gas FIRST on the Smothers Brothers YouTube video

This song was huge when it was released. It was part of an age -the late 1960s- when musicians were doing things people could not even imagine. Classical Gas was one of the early music videos, and clever. The images were all famous paintings. As Mason played Classical Gas on The Smothers Brothers, televison viewers at home were treated to hundreds of famous paintings. They flashed by as the song played, I think the longest any imaged hovered was a pause in the music, a couple of seconds, and we got to see the Van Gogh painting, Starry Night. I think I saw Classical Gas a week or two later, after CBS got deluged with letters, so they replayed it on Smothers Brothers. One of few times I felt something on televison expanded my mind. If anybody has matched Classical Gas in the 40 years since, I haven't seen it.
