iTunes Review

On her third studio album, Rise, Anoushka Shankar achieves an impressive, moving fusion of her sitar’s drone with a variety of tempos and outside influences. The set opens with the quiet, meditative “Prayer In Passing” before leaping into the roiling chants of “Red Sun” and “Mahadeva.” The latter, especially, reaches a stately peak of ethereal melody and thumping beats that is beguiling. Rise’s most impressive tracks come at its end, though. The lush “Voices of the Moon” builds to a speedy duet between sitar and violin that proves an ideal link to the lengthy closer “Ancient Love.” That track is suite-like and stealthy in its ever-intensifying movements — a great example of the sensual intelligence that Shankar achieves throughout.

Prayer in Passing in 'GENERATION RX'

by Kevin P. Miller

I licensed 'Prayer in Passing' for my new documentary called 'GENERATION RX,' and I must tell you Anoushka Shankar is indeed one of the finest artists — ever. She has a fluidity that is uncommon — and let's face it, the music is simply majestic. She may be a progidy, but she is her own creative force, to be sure! In 'Rise,' she integrates the traditional with the modern, using ididgeridoo, vocals as percussion (!), piano, traditional Indian instruments, cello, violin, etc.

Her role as 'closer' in my film (along with LA's The Outline and others) is dramatic and emotional...and I can think of no one who could have accomplished more than Ms. Shankar. So open up your vistas, people, and experience 'Rise.' It is wondrous.
