iTunes Review

Because John Lennon was one of the great songwriters of the 20th century, it's sometimes overlooked that he was also one of the great rock ‘n’ roll singers of the era as well. His steely, passionate tone, often couched in slapback echo, excessive reverb, and other complicated vocal effects, made him one of the era’s distinctive stylists. Throughout his career, with the Beatles, the Plastic Ono Band, and as a solo artist, he performed many of his old rock n’ roll favorites. Lennon began recording this collection of ‘50s rock standards with producer Phil Spector in 1973. Spector was involved in a serious car accident and couldn’t continue, so Lennon eventually finished the sessions a year later in four days. He's sometimes loose (“You Can’t Catch Me”), sometimes solemn (“Stand By Me”), often raucous (“Medley: Ready Teddy / Rip It Up,” “”Sweet Little Sixteen”) as he busts through the works of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino. This loving tribute to the music he grew up with was the last anyone heard from him for five years when he finally returned with a batch of new material in 1980, which became Double Fantasy.

Yes, Remaster finally does the trick!

As others have pointed out here, the original cd of this album did not sound good at all. That's because the original vynl recording of this album is one of the worst in the era of modern Lp's. I remember being so.... disappointed years ago (1975) when I bought this album, got home, played it, and it sounded like my phono cartridge had a foot of dust attached to it. The fidelity was awful. And I had a good stereo system at that time. All those great songs were not enjoyable until now. This is one of those albums I'd been waiting for years to see fixed. Now, finally, recordings of John Lennon having a lot of fun that everyone can enjoy.

John is Da Man

I say buy this ENTIRE album because it is not like his usual stuff, it is VERY catchy and amazing. Great work! Rip It Up / Ready Teddy and Stand By Me are the best, though.

Remastering Saves the Day!

Kudos to all involved for presenting us with this wonderful sounding remastered edition of
Dr. Winston O'Boogie's: 'Rock'n'Roll. The sound and mastering on this is a revelation!

When this cd when it was originally released it sounded pretty awful. The music was very brash sounding and noisy. In truth, it was hard to listen to. Most of this is due to Phil Spector's over-the-top production and some due to the technology available at the time. But now we have a nice warmer and cleaner sounding album with bonus tracks and a video. Somewhere up in heaven, John must be smiling.

Biography

Born: October, 1940 in Liverpool, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

Out of all the Beatles, John Lennon had the most interesting — and frustrating — solo career. Lennon was capable of inspired, brutally honest confessional songwriting and melodic songcraft; he also had a tendency to rest on his laurels, churning out straight-ahead rock & roll without much care. But the extremes, both in his music and his life, were what made him fascinating. Where Paul McCartney was content to be a rock star, Lennon dabbled in everything from revolutionary politics...
