iTunes Review

It's often suggested that Sea Change is Beck's "breakup record." It is certainly his least joyous, his least experimental, and his most mono-tonal. It's a heart-wrenching listen that takes up permanent residence in the acoustic sadcore wing of Heartbreak Hotel. From the opening chords and lonely strokes of slide guitar that begin "The Golden Age" through the final somber notes of "Side of the Road," there's no moment where an errant hip-hop beat or distorted guitar solo flips past in ironic glee. This direct approach has an unsettling, often beautifully austere result. "Guess I'm Doing Fine" sounds like the life-affirming greeting of a dead man. "Already Dead" sounds like a walk through the gardens of a mental institution with a patient who's been heavily sedated while recounting the sorry events that led him there. Much like broken-hearted troubadours - Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters or Hayden, spring to mind - Beck looks to connect without artifice.

He'll Never Do This Again

For fans of music, we all know how different Beck's albums are. And what's really interesting is how different Beck's albums are to eachother. It's hard to compare them to one another. The funky 'Midnite Vultures' cannot be compared to the acoustic lo-fi 'Mellow Gold', and the strange but amazing 'Odelay' cannot be compared to the acoustic and fun 'Mutations'. However, out of all of Beck's albums, we can be sure of one thing: Sea Change is unique amongst all. It is an artist's album, like the rest of Beck's, but its acoustic and relaxed melodies make it most impressive. Listening to Sea Change is like entering the mind of the performer because Beck makes sure that he pours his entire soul into his songs. It is an amazing album, filled with light, hope, and sadness. It is an epic album, and thankfully he will not make another one like it, knowing how different his albums are. 'Sea Change' is so amazing that it cannot be remade.

Sea Change

This is Beck's "break up" album, and as such it is sad, montoned, and mind bending. It is sad to listen to Beck sing in "Lost Cause". Compared to all of Beck's other works Sea Change stands out for its difference in music, less ROCK and more rock. Beck bring to the studio mainly soft guitars and his voice, which together make perfect chemistry. It is impossible to pin any few GOOD songs on the album, because the album as a whole is so perfectly meshed, that to split them up and label one better than the other would be foolish. Sure you may like some more than others, but each song is an integral piece in painting the picture Beck draws in his lyrics. Word of advice: if you listen to this song after yourself breaking up, it will just make you that more depressed.

One of his best.

This album, that my mom claims is morose (I disagree), is one of the best I've heard from him. It's sad, yet has an underlying uplifting quality to it. You can't really blame him for making a somewhat depressing album, though, seeing as he had just broken up with his gilfriend of 7 or so years. I know I would be sad....Anyway, this album is inspiring and has lead me to a new way of thinking as well as song-writing.

Biography

Born: July 08, 1970 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

One of the most inventive and eclectic figures to emerge from the '90s alternative revolution, Beck was the epitome of postmodern chic in an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences — pop, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop, country, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise rock, experimental rock, jazz, lounge, and Brazilian music — Beck created a body of work that was wildly unpredictable, vibrantly messy, and bursting with ideas. He was unquestionably a product...
