Album Review

Rise Against's somewhat sudden major label-ness has slightly diluted their direct assault on melodic hardcore, but the adjustment should only invite more sugar punkers to the Chicago combo's bittersweet party. Rise Against has moved up in the sonic nicety department — loud rock vet GGGarth produces, and the Andy Wallace mix is a flawless cross section of thick, grit, and slick. But Siren Song of the Counter Culture is simply the band's latest statement, combining their significant yet not unwelcome Bad Religion influence with nods to the rousing choruses of peers like A.F.I. Beyond that grandiose title — that line could've been lifted from a Crass treatise, for Pete's sake — Rise Against seem to have diversified their lyrical base. There are still salvos of sharply defined social criticism — "If we're the flagship of peace and prosperity/We're taking on water and about to f*cking sink," begins the blistering hardcore opener, "State of the Union." But Rise Against also rock on the personal reflection or relationship tip. "Paper Wings" builds a sad story about growing apart around a winning lead guitar lick straight from their Fat Wreck past, while the staggeringly paced "Blood to Blood" is in the bitter first person. "'I don't love you anymore/Is all I remember you telling me." Sometimes Siren Song gets carried away with its own melodic urgency. The multiple layers of guitars and somewhat obvious mixing tweaks in "Tip the Scales" and "Rumors of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated" lead Rise Against to lose the thread of hardcore volatility that's driven them since the beginning. Still, this is their major-label debut, and a band's gotta eat, so maybe the fuller sound and occasional forays into acoustic guitars and cello overdubs ("Dancing for Rain") are OK. Rise Against has always been pretty sincere in both its politics and commitment to hardcore revivalism, so if Siren Song nods to accessibility, it's only to recruit more kids for the raging.

be able to say "ya i liked this band BEFORE it was popular"

This CD gots it all. from the hard core Rock fan ("State of the Union") to the rock fan ("Blood to Bleed") from the Alternative fan (paper wings) to the soft rock fan (swing life away) this cd gots it all. so be able to tell all ur friends that u liked this band before it was popular.

Absolutely amazing

This album is one of the most intense rock albums I have heard in a long time. The amazing energy exhibited by Rise Against just blows my mind each time I listen to the CD. "State of the Union," "Give It All" and "Rumors of My Demise..." are three amazingly powerful tracks, with "State of the Union" and "Rumors..." being extremely political tracks. Also, "State of the Union" has some of the sweetest riffs I have heard from Rise Against. There also are some more emotional tracks like "Paper Wings" and "Blood to Bleed." However, it is not just in-your-face heavy rock. Swing Life Away shows their soft side. All in all, the album is totally worth it, but if you only want a few tracks. "State of the Union," "Life Less Frightening," "Give It All," "Swing Life Away," and "Rumors of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated" are all very worthy buys.

awesome band, cd

I came across this cd when I was searching for another band (rage against the machine). I thought it was rise against the machine, long story short, I found an awesome band. I bought this cd (my favorite songs are Life less frightening, rumors of my demise, and give it all.) I loved the cd so I went and listened to their other cds. My favorite RA song is Like the Angel.

I find their music is great to get you in a good mood. I need some rock to get me going sometimes and this is it! RA is a great band that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Chicago's Rise Against began in 1999 when ex-88 Fingers Louie bassist Joe Principe tapped area vocalist Tim McIlrath for a new project rooted in the sound and social vision of traditionalist hardcore. Joined by fellow 88 Fingers vet Dan Precision on guitar and, eventually, drummer Brandon Barnes, Rise Against signed to Fat Wreck and issued The Unraveling in 2001. Precision left the band that same year to be replaced by Todd Mohney. Extensive touring followed, leading to their sophomore outing, 2002's...
