iTunes Review
Elvis Costello has never been short on ambition. As he’s admitted, Spike is the vision of five different albums recorded at once. It’s a sprawling stylistic buffet with a bevy of guests — Roger McGuinn, Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde — and songs that tackle the personal and the political. Easy-flowing tracks such as “Veronica” and “…This Town…” make for immediate consumption, but the dense lyrical concerns of Costello’s anti-Thatcher “Tramp the Dirt Down,” the cavalier God of “God’s Comic,” who wonders while listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber if He should’ve given the world to the monkeys, and the death row screed of “Let Him Dangle” make for rewarding repeated listening. Costello tried a variety of arrangements, featuring the enlivening horns of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band for “Deep Dark Truthful Mirror” and “Chewing Gum,” while “Miss MacBeth” and “Tramp” are fueled with traditional Irish instrumentation. In addition, Costello could also sit with his acoustic and let out a plaintive wail for “Baby Plays Around.”

I Wouldn't Have it Any Other Way :)
I can't believe there isn't a single review for this! lol Sooo yeah i looove Elvis Costello...and im 14! And a girl! My dad is a huge fan and introduced me 2 his music first. When i was like three, i used 2 dance around 2 "The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes" from his abum, 'My Aim is True'. Now that im older, I've grown into liking his music even more. Elvis Costello is one of the most amazing lyrical and musical geniuses of the 20th centruy and beyond. Listening to the popular (and most-known) track "Veronica", which is a collaboration with Paul McCartney of the Beatles, might sell you on this album. The moving, "Last Boat Leaving" is thought-provoking and one of my favorites as well. I've told my friends who just don't get my love of this music that Elvis Costello is an "accquired taste" and I wouldn't have it any other way. Some might decide to buy only some tracks off this album, but I say buy the whole thing!!! Its worth it and you'll enjoy it! I did :)
Spike
Spike is the best Elvis Costello album/ CD from the 90's. This is the end of a great progression from great earlier albums from the 80's--Trust/ Imperial Bedroom/ Punch the Clock--but is a bit more ambitious, tackling complex arrangements and styles. Not much like it until When I Was Cruel. Worth a listen--I've played it frequently for 20yrs and never tire of it.
Veronica
I absoulutely love Elvis Costello. He is my all time favorite singer and I'm only 16 years old. I've admired him as a musical rolemodel since I was about 9. His music tells a story. Spike is my favorite ablum by Elvis Costello because I feel as if he stepped out of his comfort zone. My favorite Costello song, Veronica, is on the album also. I have nothing but good to say about Elvis Costello, his music, and the message it sends.
