Album Review
This self-titled EP is a teaser for Stephanie McKay's second full-length, following 2003's McKay — an album that wasn't released in the States despite being terrific and featuring dynamic production from Portishead's Geoff Barrow (who hides behind the alias of Fuzzface). Since this disc is McKay's first U.S. release, Astralwerks takes the opportunity to pluck a couple choice tracks from that first album. Barrow's work here runs even closer to the approach of DJ Premier and Pete Rock, especially on the Henry Mancini-sampling "Rising Tide"; McKay showcases her ability to belt while soothing the ears at the same time. Lead track "Tell It Like It Is" is socially conscious without being overbearing, and though she's not saying anything profound, her supple voice — as heard with Brooklyn Funk Essentials and on releases by Tricky and Soulive — is too much of a delightful force to deny.

"Stephanie McKay is the TRUTH". I have loved this artist for many years wathcing her grow from a distance. Stephanie seems to get better with age like all the old greats, if you have ever had the good fortune to meet Stephanie like i have you would realize this is a true artist consumed for the love of music, that shows in everything she does. I wish we had more artists like this sharing the spot light. Tell It LIke It Is, is a beautiful testimony to our times. Thank you Stephanie and welcome back. Music Lover.

Tell It Like It Is
I had the fortune to see Ms McKay open for the fabulous Candi Staton in Philadelphia in August (2006). I knew what to expect from Ms Staton, but was thoroughly taken with Ms McKay. Great voice, presence, and a terrific band. She told us from the state this EP would be out the next month. So I've been watching and looking and, well, here it is. I like all the songs, but the lead tune, Tell It Like It Is has a great groove. I do hope there is a full album in the future. Hell, I would especially love a live album :-) I wish her much success and hope she'll get out to the west coast some time...
