Album Review

Lewis's most popular album since The In Crowd. Very good for what it is. Gold album.

groundbreaking for many reasons

This album is groundbreaking for many reasons chief among them is that this is considered by many to be the first Earth, Wind and Fire album. Not too many people know that Maurice White was the drummer/percussionist for Ramsey during these years and this is the last album he appeared on prior to starting EWF. Maurice's influence is clear throughout this project; listen closely and you will hear Phillip Bailey, Maurice White, etc on this one. If you are an EWF fan, this is a must have.

70s Jazz Soul

This album and song embodied 70s music for me: coming together. Jazz, rock, soul, pop, great production, an incredible melody and spectacular performances by the future Earth, Wind & Fire. I first heard it on the old WSDM (Smack Dab in the Middle) growing up in Chicago and was blown away that one of the city's own greatest jazz musicians had just knocked out the pop stars. This is as close as you can get to a classic. Ramsey Lewis is a Sun God!

To Ramsey

Sun Goddess was conceived, produced for Mr. Lewis from Maurice White and EW&F. White left the Ramsey Lewis Trio in 1969 to form EW&F which had hits (at that time) with "Head to The Sky" et al and Top 40 with "That's The Way of The World." The imprint is Maurice White, but heard and never mentioned is the great production of EW&F keyboardist Larry Dunn who was the backbone of their sound.

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Ramsey Lewis has long straddled the boundary between bop-oriented jazz and pop music. Most of his recordings (particularly by the mid-'60s) were very accessible and attracted a large non-jazz audience. In 1956, he formed a trio with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Red Holt. From the start (1958), their records for Argo/Cadet were popular, although in the early days, they had a strong jazz content. In 1958, Lewis also recorded with Max Roach and Lem Winchester. On the 1965 albums The In Crowd and...
