iTunes Review

Filled with obscure lyrics, fragile arrangements, and wispy vocals, The Boy With the Arab Strap contains gorgeous, intricate music that is delicate without coming across as self-consciously ethereal or wimpy — a musical feat that’s harder to achieve than it sounds. Their melodies slowly reveal their true depth with each listen until they sink in and grab hold of the listener, and finding the hidden gems within their songs is part of the joy of listening to Belle & Sebastian. Released in 1998, a year after If You’re Feeling Sinister put them on the indie map, this album features some of their catchiest and most memorable tunes (the title track, “It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career, “A Summer Wasting”) and some of their most experimental (the loose spoken word jam of “A Space Boy Dream”). Some may find the ensemble to be too cute, but for the rest of us this is indie pop at its sweetest.

This albulm is also one of my all time favorite albulms and it was the albulm that made Belle and Sebastian my favorite band! "It Could have been a Brilliant Career" through "The Rollercoaster Ride" are some of my favorites on this albulm.

Yet another case where I've been duped into buying an album of an artist previously unfamiliar to me from I-Tunes based on the rave reviews of others. "The most important album of the decade!" "BUY THIS ALBUM--I've listened to it twice everyday for the past year and a half!", etc.

I've yet to find an artist on I-Tunes that doesn't have a rating below three stars, which I suppose is natural given that those most inclined to leave a review are listeners who have found an album that suits their tastes. As for me, I once again fall for it and buy a 4.5star album that, as one other reviewer has stated, is wretchedly wimpy. At least there's one other person out there with whom I can relate.

I can't get through a song without thinking of John Belushi in Animal House smashing the guitar over the head of the beatnik singing I Gave My Love a Cherry on the steps of The Delta Tao Chi frathouse.

A band that takes its name from a French children's television series about a boy and his dog would almost have to be precious, and to be certain, Belle & Sebastian are precious. But precious can be a damning word, and Belle & Sebastian don't have the negative qualities that the word connotes...
