The essence of India is a journey which takes us on a musical experience of India, meditative and soothing and soul-stirring.
History of Santoor
Music expresses what cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. After silence, the strains of the Santoor come nearest to expressing the inexpressive.
The Santoor is the oldest musical instrument of India. It derives its name from the ‘SHATA-TANTRI VEENA’, which in Sanskrit is ‘a hundred stringed lute’. This unique instrument, played with two ‘wooden strikers’, was heard in the hills and valleys of Kashmir. From time immemorial the Santoor was a part of the classical music repertoire in Persia and Arabia. The Sufi mystics used the sounds of Santoor as an accompaniment to their hymns. The magical resonance made its journey into the workd of Indian classical music with the vision of Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma, a renowned vocalist from Kashmir. His illustrious son Pandit Shivkumar Sharma adapted the Santoor to create new techniques of music thus making the sounds of the Santoor immortal part of the great heritage of Indian classical music.
