The Columbia Masterworks label released this double CD of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, playing mostly classical and chamber-oriented musics and proving that he certainly is adept at this art form. The Essential Wynton Marsalis is an effort to market the trumpeter to a different audience, as it contains very little swing or bop aside from bonus tracks at the end. ~ Michael G. The Essential Wynton Marsalis
     

The first time I heard Wynton Marsalis with baroque music on the trumpet I was hooked - this has been more than 10 years ago. To find this available digitally is amazing. At one point I had my equalizer set to optimize the performance of Pachelbel's Canon in D off of one of his albums. If you like music that truly feels emotion, has a real personality, and will last, this is the artist for you. His interpretation of Vivaldi is stunning. His emotion in performance is riveting. As an artist myself I am using his performance as inspiration for some of my work, and it is completely in a different field (perfumery).

AMAZING
     

Wynton Marsalis is the best trumpet player out there right now. If you love the trumpet, or if you play the trumpet, I highly recomend this CD.

The most famous jazz musician since 1980, Wynton Marsalis made a major impact on jazz almost from the start. In the early '80s, it was major news that a young and very talented black musician would choose to make a living playing acoustic jazz rather than fusion, funk, or R&B. Marsalis' arrival on the scene started the "Young Lions" movement and resulted in major labels (most of whom had shown no interest in jazz during the previous decade) suddenly signing and promoting young players.
