Album Review

An experienced MC with piles of mixtapes and other underground releases in his past, Chamillionaire follows Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall as yet another Houstonian to surface aboveground in 2005. He's immeasurably superior to Jones in every aspect but self-promotion, isn't quite as imposing as Slim Thug, and, compared to childhood ally and former Color Changin' Click partner Wall, he's much sterner than sweet, indicated by the title of this album. The Chamillionaire that Southerners and other rabid followers of Southern rap have been hearing throughout the past few years hasn't made many concessions with this major-label release. He goes relatively soft on a couple tracks, but the tradeoff is that he continues to get better with time, and an overwhelming majority of the material here is only a slightly polished spin on what can be heard on his mixtapes. Even when the MC is at his most vengeful, he boasts an easy flow that's as easy to listen to as a warm, fluid bassline. Though he occasionally sounds as defensive as someone backed into a corner (hear the vicious "Frontin" in particular) and pens a few abjectly vigilant rhymes, his voice always slides through the ears with almost as much effortless composure as a Nate Dogg hook. Speaking of hooks, Cham provides almost all of them, switching between rhymes and singsongy vamps on a dime. Lyrically, he has a lot more range than the contemporaries mentioned above, making it evident that he took heed from the gripping narratives and bleak rhymes within the early Geto Boys albums. There's no "Mind of a Lunatic" or "Mind's Playing Tricks on Me" here, but there is "Rain," a track featuring Scarface that's as sobering as it is uplifting. Cham's as incisive and clever and nimble here as he is anywhere else: "Tired of being poor, tryin' to leave the rats/Walk out to see that three of your tires are flat/And that one tire left's a sign, I hope/That helps you to keep on grindin' when you're kind of broke/That helps you to keep composure up around your folk/That keeps you from tryin' to wrap a rope around your throat." The Sound of Revenge is as strong as Slim Thug's Already Platinum and has more dimensions. The Beat Bullies man the switches on six tracks. Scott Storch, Cool & Dre, Mannie Fresh, Play-N-Skillz, Happy Perez, and Sol Messiah also put in time. [A clean version of the album was also made available.]

BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR BUY THIS

Chamillionaire was the king of the underground and got the nickname mixtape messiah cause his flows were so insane. Don't buy that Mike Jones crap where he flows for 15 seconds slows down then repeats the same line 5 times. Chamillionaire has an innate ability to get his rhymes to blend perfectly with the beat. If you don't believe me, just listen to the chorus of peepin me, void in my life, and one of my favorites in the trunk.

Ill even tell you which songs you should buy if you dont want to buy the whole album, which you should because its just such a good album.

Turn It Up - first single off the album, my favorite record off of the sound of revenge everything about this track is insane get this record first

In The Trunk - sick beat and the chorus is insane while chamillionaire flows throughout the entire song without stopping

Ridin - Id never heard of Krayzie Bone before, but he delivers on this record and again chamillionaire is just non stop flows here

Frontin - real sick beat and do i even need to say it anymore? chamillionaire just flows with the beat so well in all of his records

Rain - This is around where the album starts to slow down with the exception of fly as the sky, beat wise not quality wise, and the beat is sick with chamillionaire again delivering with his rhymes very well

Fly As the Sky - insane beat, Rasaq and Lil Wayne are FIRE on this record and chamillionare flows like none other once again

Void In My Life - chorus really flows well with the beat and the entire record is a non stop flow by chamillionaire with breaks for choruses, insane record

Outro - this is the first time i have ever listened to an outro extensively, nice chorus and even when chamillionaire is basically talking, he rhymes so well that it turns into a really good record instead of just an outro

There's a reason why there was a bidding war for this guy. Chamillionaire is the best lyricist out there BY FAR and if you didn't hear him while he was underground, buy his album NOW and start learnin about the best rapper in the industry.

CHAMILLITARY MANE

Simply the best

Chamillionaire is amazing. All of his songs are off the hook. definitely the best in the game right now.

THE REALEST IN THE GAME

This is the CD of the year. Not only is Chamillionaire runnin the streets of H-town, he is about to blow up big after this CD. When it comes to lyrics King Koopa cant be touched. I encourage everyone to buy this CD and all of his CD's in the future.

Biography

Born: November 28, 1979 in Houston, TX

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

Dubbed "the Mixtape Messiah," Houston's Chamillionaire arrived late as a major-label artist during his city's 2005 takeover of mainstream rap — the Top Ten Sound of Revenge, released during November that year, followed albums from Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and former Color Changin' Click partner Paul Wall — but he had already built a loyal following outside the South and received significant print coverage. Through a prolific succession of mixtapes, Chamillionaire (born Hakeem Sediki) became...
