Album Review

As punk albums go, The Spaghetti Incident? lacks righteous anger and rage. As Guns N' Roses albums go, it's a complete delight, returning to the ferocious, hard-rocking days of Appetite for Destruction. The Gunners play Stooges and New York Dolls songs exactly as they do Nazareth — as straight-ahead, driving riff-rockers. After the epic Use Your Illusions, the band sounds like it's having fun, not caring about making "art" like "November Rain" or "Estranged." Unfortunately, the tacked-on Charles Manson song leaves a bad aftertaste, but not because of the song itself; the inclusion of the song seems like a publicity-seeking stunt, a way to increase their sales while trying to regain their street credibility. And as The Spaghetti Incident? proves, they didn't need to stoop so low.

I'm a pretty big Guns N' Roses fan and I openly admit that this isn't their best work. They didn't put out that many albums as a band though. Chinese Democracy doesn't count. ANYWAY, just because "it isn't their best" doesn't mean that it's a bad album. Complete opposite, in fact. It's hella good. Not only is the album cover a big heaping pile of Chef Boyardee, but the CD on the inside is pretty good too. We can cut out the crap (I don't care about you/look at your game girl) and get to the good stuff ("hair of the dog" is awesome, and admittedly I like "Since I don't Have You").

My final opinion is that "The Spaghetti Incident" is more like a plate of pasta than you think. On the outside, it looks like a tangled heap of spaghetti, but if you dig a teeny bit deeper. you'll find the big juicy meatballs. (The spaghetti being the "lowsy" tunes and the meatballs the epic ones.)

Most people who are commenting probably have never even heard the album before, seriously. Or ar probably just going by what the critics have said. It's a known fact that critics don't like cover albums. Having listened to the album, I don't think it's that bad. There are some great covers, like "New Rose", "Since I Don't Have You", "Attitude", "Raw Power", "Black Leather", and "Hair of the Dog". It depends on your taste though. I suggest that before you go and buy the album, you listen to it online or something just to make sure you don't spent 10 bucks on something you don't want. Trust me, it's happened to me before.

I'd love to find out who Gnr Freak is, I'd pound knobs on his head. Who the hell cares who Charles Manson is, this is GN'R we're talking about, not some other crazy @*$ guy. If you actually give this album a chance, it's really not too bad. It's way better than listening to todays rockers, who couldn't carry a tune through a song if it was in a box.

At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop-metal, Guns N' Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don't play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynist, and violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive,...
