Album Review

The selection and sequencing strategy adopted by compiler Ron Furmanek for The Ultimate Peter & Gordon is easy to see. Allowed to pick 20 tracks, he has chosen all 14 songs by the '60s British duo that reached Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart, from major hits like "A World Without Love," "Lady Godiva," and "I Go to Pieces" to minor ones like "To Show I Love You" and "The Jokers." The remaining six selections are either non-charting A-side singles ("You've Had Better Times"), B-sides ("Love Me, Baby," "The Town I Live In"), or album tracks ("I Still Love You," "Broken Promises," "My First Day Alone"). The selections have been sequenced in chronological order by recording date, not release date, so that, for example, "Don't Pity Me," which was released as a single in November 1965, precedes "To Know You Is to Love You," which was released as a single in July 1965 because "Don't Pity Me" was actually recorded 19 days before "To Know You Is to Love You." The sequencing gives a good sense of the duo's development, from the harmony-filled soft rock sound of their first three Paul McCartney-penned songs (with McCartney himself here introducing the third one, "I Don't Want to See You Again") to more elaborate productions such as the one for "True Love Ways" on which Gordon Waller steps out as lead singer with Peter Asher playing a subsidiary role as harmony singer, and on to the novelty songs "Lady Godiva" (a rare Asher lead) and "Knight in Rusty Armour" that gave them their last big hits. The focus on the Billboard chart means singles that placed on other charts, notably "Baby, I'm Yours," a Top 20 hit in the U.K., and "Never Ever," which charted (though just barely) in Cash Box, are missing. But the set still gives a good sense of Peter and Gordon's best and most popular recordings. [This is the first Peter and Gordon CD to go back to the original master tapes. The sound, with that extreme stereo separation typical of the 1960s, is superb, and "Woman" and "The Town I Live In" are presented in stereo for the first time.]

Not really the "Ultimate"

(First, a caution: the AMG review attached to this item is actually a review of The Ultimate Peter & Gordon, a different CD issued by Collector's Choice Music that has the same title but different content.) This is a good compilation for P&G fans who want to add certain non-hits to their collections, but for the casual listener, The Ultimate Peter & Gordon disc issued by Collector's Choice is more appropriate: It contains all the hits (including the Lennon-McCartney penned "I Don't Want To See You Again", and "Knight In Rusty Armour", which peaked at #15.)

Thank you, Jane and Peter Asher ...

At about the time I hit puberty in 1965 or so, which was a dreamy time in my life that I shall always cherish, I discovered the beautiful Jane Asher and her incredibly talented brother Peter. The Ashers, of course, don't know this (although I have corresponded by email with Jane, who bakes and sells wonderful cakes these days). The sweet harmonies of Peter and Gordon allowed me to yearn and burn without feeling guilty about it. As I hear these wonderful hits today, I can hardly hold back a tear. What's wrong with being sensitive, artistic and male? Nothing my wife says. I defy anyone to find a better version of True Love Ways. Jolly good!

I met them both long ago

I have been looking for their greatest hits since I was a little girl. While in Chicago, as a young child, my father was racing go karts and our family stayed at the same hotel as Peter and Gordon. I was utterly thrilled when I saw them out by the pool and eventually talked my dad into taking me down and meeting them. They were VERY cool and the next day came out to the track. Gordon told my dad they were on their way to tape the Mike Douglas Show and that his father (if I remember right) was into racing also. They were going to meet up with our family, but we all lost touch. So... Gordon, if you read these things. let us know! We'd love to reconnect. Since I met you both in my pre-teen years, I turned out to be a DJ for 10 years, still doing it occasionally. GREAT MUSIC! Ahhh, those were the days weren't they? Keep rockin !

Biography

Formed: 1963 in London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '60s

In June 1964, Peter & Gordon became the very first British Invasion act after the Beatles to take the number one spot on the American charts with "A World Without Love." That hit, and their subsequent successes, were due as much or more to their important connections as to their talent. Peter Asher was the older brother of Jane Asher, Paul McCartney's girlfriend for much of the 1960s. This no doubt gave Asher and Gordon Waller access to Lennon-McCartney compositions that were unrecorded by the...
