Album Review

A Thorn for Every Heart follows up its 2003 EP with this tight and smart follow-up, a 30-minute-long exclamation point of screamo/punk fusion that offers multiple layers of bludgeoning power chords, chiming arpeggios, angelic harmonies, and hoarse roars of rage. There are even occasional incursions of piano and violin, just to keep you guessing. Lyrically, there's nothing here that will really grab your attention, but in sonic terms, A Thorn for Every Heart is surprisingly advanced for such a young band. The vocal arrangements on "February" and "Night to Remember" will catch you by surprise, and guitarists Phil Nguyen and Jeff Harber are gratifyingly unwilling to just build a lazy wall of sound for the singer to yell at; instead, they toss unexpected rhythmic changeups ("Prediction") and elaborate contrapuntal chime-and-grind arrangements ("99 With an Anchor") into the mix at every opportunity, keeping things both interesting and, frequently, jaw-droppingly pretty. Great stuff — it will be fun to see how they follow this one up.

Whoa, where these guys come from?

I completely stumbled upon this group and album by accident while browsing through the itunes catalog. I'm a fan of groups such as Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Halifax, etc. This album has several songs that have classic guitar hooks that you latch onto right away. However, I prefer songs where even after listening to the same song for the 50th time you hear or discover something new to the song. This album is chalk full of such songs. An incredible first album for these boys. If they can stay together, look for big things. I'm starting the bandwagon. Are you on board?

Fun

If you exclude the screaming, its very radio-friendly, not that theres too much of it. Perhaps not enough. Anyway the pop+emo+lots of double-kick pedal=nice variation especially with the music and how it transitions with the rest of the album. Fans of Story of the Year, (old)finch, the Used, Senses Fail, Thrice, Rufio, and other bands of that style will love this cd, guarenteed.

The last song makes the entire CD worth buying

Things aren't so beautiful now (pt 2) is possibly one of the best songs I've heard in a couple of years. I'm not sure how a group that wrote such a mediocore CD (the only other tracks worth listening to were numbers 1 and 2) could finish it up with such an incredible song. Hopefully their next CD will have more of the passion and songwriting ability shown in the final track of this CD.

Their energetic live show quickly helped to foster a local following as well, and the EP's several thousand copies were all sold out by...
