Customer Reviews
This is DEFINATELY the one!
Without a doubt, Utada has definately picked the right album to truely debut in the U.S. Although, the only reason why I'm disappointed is because "Sanctuary" was never ever officially released.
Come Back To Me - 4/5 (A good ballad type mainstream song that gets better and better each time you listen to it)
Me Muero - 4/5 (Latin-vibed, even has some raggae sounds so if you like that kind of music, this will interest you)
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI - 5/5 (One of the best songs on the album and it's amazing what you can do with a sample of a track"
Apple and Cinnamon - 5/5 (This song never grows old, although the chorus is pretty repetitive)
Taking My Money Back - 5/5 [I love the beginning but it seems to similar to the Destiny's Child track (Say My Name)]
Automatic, Pt. II - 5/5 (Better than the original Automatic for SURE!)
Dirty Desire - 5/5 (You won't hear too many sexy tracks from Utada and this one is a dance pop track with guitars)
Poppin' - 3/5 (Least favorite song on the album. I don't really like that there's almost more talking than singing).
On and On - 5/5 (BEST SONG ON ALBUM according to many fans and I like it too so definately give this club track a try)
Overall Album - 5/5 Each track just keeps getting better but hopefully someday Utada will officially release "Sanctuary"
FYI, This One Speaks to Me!
Come Back to Me (4.5/5) - Utada picked an excellent track for her first single. Mainstream, easy to remember lyrics, and a radio-friendly beat make this a great ballad for those who want their loved ones to forgive them for their past mistakes. I especially enjoyed the line "I wish I could photoshop our bad memories." It resonated with me.
Me Muero (4/5) - The Latin track, with a jazzy flavor. It's a good song, and listeners who are in a rut over a relationship should relate to it.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI (5/5) - This is the best song in the album. If you're wondering about the track title, it samples Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" from the 1983 movie of the same name. It's hauntingly beautiful, and the lyrics also reflect the original. Standout lines include "Om Mani Padme Hum" (the six syllable mantra that invokes the embodiment of compassion in Tibetan Buddhism) and "Like Captain Picard, I'm chillin' and flossin." If you don't like this song, there's something wrong with you. This should be the second single, if "On and On" isn't chosen first.
Apple and Cinnamon (4/5) - "It started out so simple and innocent" is such a deceptively simple line and yet is says so much. A song about falling out of love. The beat and the vocals definitely have "chemistry, like Apple and Cinnamon."
Taking My Money Back (4/5) - The independent anthem of the album. I don't know, some of the lyrics seem a little uninspired, but the song itself is good, and Utada always delivers on the vocals, so it's a solid song overall.
This One (Crying Like a Child) (5/5) - What a magnificent song! The moment I heard the guitar riff, I was hooked! This is also a highlight of the album. "How can you say you don't remember?" and "This one is for the happiness I'll be wishing you forever." Brilliant!
Automatic Part II (3/5) - I think this song's okay. It's abruptly short, but be that as it may, it's a decent "remix." You're better off with the five-minute original.
Dirty Desire (4/5) - "Bring that beat back!"
Poppin' (4/5) - I like when she says she owns the stars in the sky, I don't know why.
On and On (5/5) - This will probably become a single, with FYI. "Honeys if you're gay, burn it up, like a gay parade. Honeys if you're straight, pump it up, take it all the way." and "Intoxicated, emancipated, unapologetic is what I am today!"
Not a single dud - a pop classic
Wow, now this album brings me back to the days when pop music was GOOD. Every song is a winner, from the breezy "Apple and Cinnamon" (perfect slow jam for those summer nights), the flirtatious "Me Muero", and the club jam "Dirty Desire" to the heartwrenching single "Come Back To Me", vulnerable "This One (Crying Like A Child)", and inspired "Merry Xmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI". Utada's vocals are beautiful and moving. What I like best is that every song is catchy and pleasing to the ear, yet as an artist, she takes risks and maintains her integrity with thoughtful lyrics. This is the best Pop Album of the Year so far. A true winner, not a single dud in the mix!
