Album Review

The self-appointed CEO of intrepid indie grrrl rock sparks one more with Up Up Up Up Up Up, an ebullient addition to an already prolific and deeply admirable career. The playful synthetics and occasional stabs at atypical Ani DiFranco stylings belie the general humorlessness of her lyrics: "'Tis of Thee" is as annoyed with American TV-news culture as one can get (as might be expected of street-cynical Ani). "Come Away" is just plain corny, wistfully scrapbooking a lover away with tinkly punches on an electric piano. "Virtue" is wackier, with shades of old songs by young Edie Brickell, and "Jukebox" sounds relentlessly synthesized, funky with baffling lyrics and weird abrupt high notes like the ones you either adore or abhor from contempo sister Alanis Morissette. Some fans may continue to dream of an album wherein Ani shows off some real chops, as she'll do for lucky people in concert: she's actually a wonderful 12-string guitarist, but you can't really get a feel for that here.

My first Ani D. album wasn't what I thought it would be

4 stars for great songwriting and originality. I loved "Angry Anymore" at the time of this album's release. "'Tis of Thee", "Virtue", "Jukebox", & "Everest" are the gems on this album but I was expecting more when I bought it back in summer of '99 because a lot of my friends put so much hype on her name. If you are a newcomer to Ani's music I'd recommend starting with "Not a Pretty Girl" or "Living In Clip". Those feature some of her classic songs and really showcase her talent to the best ability it can. Still this is a very good album I'd give it 3.5 stars so I rounded up to 4.

One to have early, not much to remember.

When I first stumbled upon Ani Difranco back in 1999, this album was hot off the presses, and I had just been hooked by Little Plastic Castle (still my favorite Ani album). I proceeded then to buy just about everything she had released until that point, and this album was second in line. I remember being fascinated by how different an album could be from it's immediate precursor, something that I marveled even more at when To The Teeth was released just a few moths later. However impressed I was by this album at the time, only Virtue, Jukebox and the first few minutes of Hat Shaped Hat do I ever really listen to anymore. For the most part, the album is an overly low-key snoozefest that doesn't do much to showcase Ani's truly remarkable talent. For the burgeoning or harcore fan only; not for the casual Ani listener.

I Love This Album...Very Cool Ani...Verry Cool.

My second album into Ani Difranco's World after "Living In Clips"
Every song I hear, has my wanting more!
Great Live show too...I saw her in Boston at the Orpheum Theatre.
GO ANI. Keep Going UP UP UP......

A folkie in punk's clothing, Ani DiFranco battled successfully against the Goliath of corporate rock to emerge as one of the most influential and inspirational cult heroines of the 1990s. A resolute follower of D.I.Y. ethos, DiFranco released her records through her own indie label, Righteous Babe, slowly but steadily building a devout grassroots following on the strength of a relentless tour schedule. An ardent feminist and an open bisexual, her songs tackled issues like rape, abortion,...
