iTunes Review

For neo-soul performers looking for authentic material to draw from, there is no better place to find it than the early '70s, the heyday of real soul and the peak period for artists like Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Curtis Mayfield. Van Hunt draws perfectly from these classic artists on his debut, an album that, with its artful balance of funk and soul, would have sounded as good in 1974 as it did in 2004 when it was released. Supremely talented, Hunt played almost all of the instruments here and wrote or co-wrote each tune. This is the kind of debut upon which long, successful careers are based. Key tracks: "Down Here in Hell (With You)," "Seconds of Pleasure," "Dust"

An Overlooked Masterpiece

Van Hunt's accomplished debut album was a brilliant achievement, and the best album that was released in 2004. Infusing the essence of old school soul and funk, Van manages to sway and swoon with his sexy vocals throughout this entire album in a way that most of his contemporaries try to but fail at. "Seconds of Pleasure" is the key track on this album, but every song is a masterful creation. Due yourself a favor and pick up this underrated gem.

Best R&B Album I've Heard in Years

In a word Incredible.

MISZUNDASTOOD

Now I'm only 12, and as a child now my parents ike a lot of unmainstream music. I do like Beyonce and all of them but it seems like people like Van Hunt are better entertainers than the ushers and leverts but if u like music you need to be here.

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '90s, '00s

R&B crooner Van Hunt grew up surrounded by the pimp lifestyle of his father. A soundtrack of classic soul and contemporary R&B was his backdrop and Hunt immersed himself in the tones and moods of it all. A move from the Midwest to Atlanta in his early twenties allowed Hunt to hone his soul sound in the making. He'd been playing guitar and writing songs since his teens, so naturally a career in music was on the horizon. Capitol inked him a deal in 2003 and his self-titled debut arrived in...
